Looking up from the bottom of the Blue Hole... by kenmerk Quite a fun dive, especially if the tide is a bit low.... Enter by getting washed over the lip of the reef, trying to time the waves right to enter the mouth of the blue hole. Once in, drop straight down thru a dark vertical shaft about 80 feet. Once you emerge from the bottom of the hole, the dive procedes as a drift dive along a wall, which if the currents are strong enough will wash you down to the Blue Corner. (while enjoying the patroling reef sharks which are all about...) Leave a Comment

A Boat Load of Converts... by kenmerk See shiny white encrusted bipeds emerging from the Milky way Lagoon. Famed for a au natural spa treatment, boat loads of visitors come here and scoop up the white mud at the bottom of the lagoon and smear it all over their sun burnt skin... Quite fun.... and soothing... Leave a Comment

Divers Anchored down along the Blue Corner by kenmerk Probably the most famous dive site in Palau is the Blue Corner. Noted for the gin & tonic clear water, strong currents , and sharks sharks sharks. The strong currents necessitate that dives either hold on to the ledge of the corner, or use a small line and anchor to tie themselves down to the ledge. On my first dive here, I didnt really get it. Sure there were some reef sharks about, but the currents were really ripping and visibility wasnt good. I ended up spending most of the dive just holding on for dear life... I'm glad I went back though. Next time out the currents were a bit more slack, with much better visibility. And in these conditions, there is just a panorama of marine life circling you. I got to the point where I would take any more shark pix unless I could get at least four or five in a single frame.... Leave a Comment

This one is about 4 feet across... by kenmerk Once of the more famed denizens of these waters are the many giant clams about. (Remember that old Batman show where the Joker is about to feed Batman and Robin to the beasts ?? Kinda like that..) Once easy place to see them is to snorkel about 50 meters off the beach at the Pacific Palau Resort... Leave a Comment

Narrow Channel in the Rock Islands, Palau by kenmerk Really the Rock Islands are the best reason to visit Palau.... Hundreds of small limestone rocks jutting out of the turquoise water... and just filled with all sorts of tropical wildlife, from dudong (sea cows) to crocodiles to every sort of tropical fish you'd ever hope to encounter... Turtle Cave, Palau.. by kenmerk Similar dive, where, entry is through an overhead opening, and again dropping down through a dark cave... Though named turtle cave, I dint see no turtles. Towards the end of the dive, a couple of reef sharks did charge though the middle of our group chasing after a tuna, though, which was pretty exciting... Leave a Comment

As is the trend around the world these days, there is a place in Palau where u can swim with the dolphins.... Actually you can watch a dolphin show, swim with, snorkel with, dive with, probably even breed with the dolphins if you pay enough $$$'s I suppose.... Now I can see that it would be interesting to swim around with dolphins in the wild, but I have a little bit of a problem with doing it in an enclosed pen for $$$'s. (A little too much of close touristy encounter for the animals for my tastes, I guess....) Anyway, I did go down and see them jump around a bit one day.... Sorry no picts as I accidentally deleted the *&^%$## picts I took that day.. (another beer related causuality, I'm afraid...) Leave a Comment

Jelly Fish Lake by kenmerk And most famous amongst the rock island locations is the mysterious jelly fish lake. Here millions of white and orange jelly fish fill this salt lake. The jelly fish have lost their stinging ability, make it safe to swim among them. When you dive down in the middle of the pulsating pack of jelly fish, it really feels like you have entered another world... Leave a Comment

Mastigias Jellyfish by GuthrieColin On one particular Island the sea water has continuously been able to flow from the ocean into the middle of the island by seeping through the coral to a one of a kind lake. Known as Jellyfish Lake, it is a wonder that contains a kind species of jellyfish that is found nowhere else on earth. Every other species of Jellyfish can sting and kill their prey in that way, but these jellyfish have the unique property of not being able to sting. The Mastigias jellyfish by an evolutionary turn have lost their ability to sting, and since they have been isolated from any predators they have been able to thrive in their secluded habitat. Since the Jellyfish are unable to sting, they have found a new way to produce their own food. They migrate from the bottom of the lake to the top following the sun. In the day they rise to the surface and follow the most direct sunlight. Algae cells in their body collect sunlight and produce proteins and sugars which feed the jellyfish. In the evening they move to the bottom of the lake to gather phosphates and nitrates to fertilize their algae. The Rock Island tours will bring you to a dock on the coast of the island where you will hike over the deteriorating coral island and to the lake where you can swim in the lake and you will be able to see the jellyfish up close. It is an eerie feeling swimming with Jellyfish and they feel really strange as you swim into them. Leave a Comment

A trip to the Ngatpang waterfall will take you about 45 minutes from Koror. The road is dirt but is not as bad as it gets further north. From the road there are several signs pointing the way. There is a short trail down to the bottom that is very muddy so be careful. one of the members of my group broke their sandles in the mud. Not like it was a serious injury or een a big loss but be forwarned that it will more than likely be muddy on the way down. The waterfall itself is only about 15 to 20 feet (4-6 m) tall but the surrounding rainforest foliage and sounds of birds and other wildlife make it one to truely remember. I have heard of people swimming in the pool directly beneath the falls but I did not myself. Leave a Comment
