We never actually spent much time in the older part of Port Moresby, down by the waterfront. By the time we arrived in PNG, Moresby had sprawled up the coastal hills and had newer areas such as Waigani (the Parliament buildings) and Boroko inland. Boroko especially had a lot of shops where we did our grocery shopping in a supermarket, bought our newspapers, did our banking and generally anything else that we needed. There was a drought during our time in Moresby, so things looked quite dusty and bleak in these areas, as you can see from the pic. Boroko was always a hot and bustling place, especially on the weekends.

There was no problem in obtaining all the necessities of life and I don't recall the prices being too over the top. Most people did not stock up too much with goods for their freezers because the power supply situation was sometimes spotty and it would not be good to lose a whole freezer full of food. The drought was affecting the water levels at the hydro dams that normally supplied the city with power.

  • This is fairly hidden in the suburbs. But the selection is wide and varied.

Handicrafts, penile gourds, sculptures, masks and even PNG caps and T-shirts

    Reasonable.
