  • Usually by 20:30 or 21:00 the bar is thinning out and most guests have gone to bed. This is not a place for nightlife! On our way back to the room, I accidentally step on a frog, which screams and jumps off into the night. I don’t know who was most taken aback, me or the frog! It’s a night for wildlife, as in the bathroom, we have a cicada which David nearly steps on. It screams too, jumps high and lands in the bin where it continues screaming. You wouldn’t think a small insect like that could make so much noise. It’s air-piercingly loud and goes on for a very long time. Eventually we put the bin outside the front door, I don’t want it to fly off and land on my face in the night. We can hear it for ages, still screaming inside the bin.

We would sometimes take in the live entertainment acts brought in from overseas by some of the bigger hotels, such as The Islander in Port Moresby. Usually our nightlife was confined to Friday nights at the RSL Club on Ela Beach - a few beers and a great meal sitting outside in the tropics. Sunset on the Coral Sea, overlooking Port Moresby

  • Usually very quiet. Home entertainment is popular. Major hotels provide their own entertainment. The capital, Port Moresby, offers the variety of entertainment and nightlife of most major cities.

  • Our hotel! While in Lae for orientation they told us not to leave our hotel room. And they didn't have to tell us twice! We enjoyed beer and pool from the confines of the hotel. Good thing we were in a group! We could hear the disco pumping nearby, but didn't dare venture out. The stories we heard kept us indoors....

    SUPER CASUAL

GOOD SPOT FOR CHILLIN' OVER A COUPLE OF BEERS. The New Wewak Hotel is located on the top of a hill at the end of a peninsula jutting out into the corral sea. You look down off the point over turquoise sea and distant islands. The hotel features a bush materials pub in the back garden decorated with funky carvings and furnished with locally-made rattan chairs and tables. The pub, unlike the Windjammer Hotel (one of Wewak's other popular drinking spots) is patronized mainly by locals. Go there for a drink and people will make you feel welcome. Heed the warning sign on the big mango tree: 'Do not pee at the base of this tree.'

    Casual.

La Mana gold club: Mad nightlife
  • Updated By elsegundo on October 30, 2006

  • The amount of people carrying on about there being no nightlife in Port Moresby is the reason I'm writing this. There IS a nightlife in Moresby, and, having been to about 40 or 50 countries around the world and sampling their nightlife, I would say PNG is right up there. As long as you're not so afraid of the place to actually look past the Yacht club or Ella Beach (though the food there IS nice) there are good places for young people (are there young white people in PNG? Maybe I'm the only one). La mana gold club is a brilliant night club. It is open-air (half), multi-story and caters for most ages. The music is new, the drinks plentiful, the security very good (for the yacht club dwellers) and the young locals pack the place out. Friday is the best night to go, cover charge is small and the place is clearly the pick of Moresby's clubs. If you want to pick up, you pick up. Another good spot for late drinks, dancing and particularly pool players is the Chilli Club (formerly known as the british club). But please people, stop saying the nightlife in Moresby doesn't exist when you have no idea what you're talking about. People will tell you it's dangerous at La Mana etc. Bollocks. It's very safe, great fun and relatively unknown to the expat/travelling community. See you this new years, if you're game.

Anything goes but please wear something if you're male.

The Gold Club. Lamana: Port Moresby nightlife

  • Located along waigani drive, this is one of the best nightclubs in Port Moresby! It's a great set up. A large inside area with a bar and plenty of Pokie machines if that's your thing. Sometimes a live band will be playing. out the door there's a multi levelled out door area where more music will be playing. There's a good size dance floor and another smaller outside bar. Up stairs use to have a gambling area to play roulette and blackjack ect. Unfortunatly this was closed when I was last there, but who knows, it might have been re-opened. Another outdoor level is located upstairs and there's another bar there too!
You can have a real good time here and it's safe. I never had any problems going here. Like all nightclubs, watch your wallet.

The club and it's car park are located in a compound and security guards man the gates and patrol the car park.

You must wear a collared shirt and nice shoes. You probably wouldn't get in with thongs and shorts.

Last time I was there, the entry fee was 10 Kina per head.

    Have fun!!
