Port Moresby had an excellent Chinese restaurant but, in general, most of the hotels that I stayed at throughout PNG were first-class. Quite a few were air conditioned (its use was often rationed due to power shortages) and the settings were very well done. Photo of a friendly Papuan Hornbill at a hotel in Madang.

This food is prepared on traditional coral bed cooking stoves. Small coral 'fingers' are heated up by piling on top of a small fire and retain heat for 6-8 hours.
Food is cooked in trays made of Pandanus leaf .
Afterwards they are thrown away - very enviromentaly friendly - and no pots to scrub!

  • You won't go hungry in Papua New Guinea. Western cuisine is available in hotels, restaurants, guest houses, lodges and village resorts. Port Moresby has many Asian and European restaurants. For something different try a traditional 'mumu' of roast pork, sweet potatoes, rice and greens.

Du & Naz: WEWAK, East Sepik Province

  • (As of July 1998 anyway): Du & Naz is great because it offers basic, home-style meals (Papua New Guinean meals and things like fish/chicken and chips) at CHEAP PRICES, and because it has an air conditioned dining room. Du & Naz caters mainly to the locals, too, so it's a great place for people who are interested in actually experiencing PNG (but not so good for those who just want to see it from their pool-side hotel rooms and air-conditioned cars).

Look around to see what most people are eating, and then point to it when asked what you want. Nothing there is particularly fancy, but it's all pretty good. There's usually a good stew on for lunch.

  • There is an asian place called chopsticks. Top notch chinese food. Although you'd think you were in Poland in WW2 the way they carry on with double bolted doors, peep holes and the like. The price is reasonable and the service good.

The salt and pepper squid is superb and the thai chilli prawns are exceptional. The chinese tea is only for the true drinkers :).

The Round House Restaurant: Chinese Restaurant

  • The Round House Restaurant.

Located in Waigani, just a block away from Brian Bell, there is a compound. Drive right in. The gate should be open. Inside you will find this restaurant. It's a great Chinese restaurant! If you like Chinese food, you won't be disappointed. The staff are great! They are very friendly and helpful! Have a chat with them and you'll see what I mean.

Right next to the restaurant is a nightclub called Star Gazer. Head on in if you feel like a game of 8 ball. There's a few tables to choose from and it's rarely crowded. You can sing a bit of Karioki there as well if that's your thing.

At the enterence of the compound there is a beatle nut stand. These are very popular in PNG. Sometimes after a meal I use to buy some beatle nut and cigarettes and share them with the locals in the compound. I wouldn't chew but I'd have a cigarette and a chat with them. (even though I don't smoke, it's a good ice breaker) I met some nice and interesting people. They really appreciated it and always remembered me when I returned.

If you like sea food, the Chilli Prawns are pretty good! Also try the Butter Prawns!
