Malaria!

by minstrel74

Malaria is rife in the Solomon Islands. At the time of my visit, there was no hotter place in the world for the disease than here. I met numerous locals during my stay who were suffering from it, and they didn't seem to think much of it. They treated it just like the common cold. It comes; it goes. Of course, you should NOT have this attitude. Untreated, malaria can be deadly and at the least can spoil your trip or put you out of commission for a few days. Be sure to see a travel doctor before you visit; they will probably give you a prescription for malaria pills (e.g. Lariam or Malarone) to help slow down the effects of the disease should you contract it. The pills are NOT a vaccine and you should still wear long trousers at night or at least cover your body with insect repellent of some sort.

Water in Gizo

by minstrel74

Gizo seems to be subject to frequent water shortages and brief droughts--surprising given its location near the equator and its lush surroundings. When I was there, the water at my lodge almost ran out entirely. If you are asked to conserve water, please do your part. The water at my lodge came from a catchment tank, not from a city water utility company, so we really had nobody to rely on for conservation but ourselves.

Tropical Heat/Sunburn

by minstrel74

The heat in the Solomon Islands can be oppressive, especially if you've flown in from a temperate location such as North America or Europe. Be sure to allow for a couple days of rest when you arrive, if possible, before undertaking any physically strenuous activities such as hiking or climbing. And make sure to drink a lot of water. When you're this close to the equator, it's not difficult to get a sunburn. Be careful about how much time you expose your skin to the direct rays of the sun. I went snorkeling for a couple hours and got the worst sunburn of my trip while out in Gizo.

Be careful with mosquitos due to Malaria. Just be careful with your money and try to stay with locals wherever you are. The more locals you befreind the safer you are. Sometimes, even in town , villagers will rip you off when you buy artifacts. If you have a local with you, you are garunteed to get a good deal!
