The Billfish: Palangi Cental

The Billfish is the local hangout for Palangis (foreigners). You will also find quite a few Tongan people there, so it doesn't feel TOTALLY touristy. A lot of the PeaceCorps and AYAD (Australian) volunteers tend to be there on Friday nights in particular. The majority of the bar is outdoors, there aren't a lot of walls or anything. On the weekend the dance floor takes off. If you're here for a while though you will notice that they play the same music every week, to the point that they will sometimes play the same songs twice in one night!

It's open late on Friday nights, but closes at midnight on Saturdays because of the sabbath. For a true foreigner in Tonga experience, go here on Friday night and when you're done get a taxi to the Albert Road BBQ (open 24 hours on Friday night) and chow down.

Dress Code: Just make sure you're wearing shoes.

Girls, no revealing clothing as per the rest of tonga!

Each Thursday night there is a fabulous night of entertainment with a smorgasbord of traditional dishes, dancing, music and song and a kava ceremony . My husband was picked to partake in the drinking of the Kava and for that he got a certificate and we got to go first to the buffet!

I would highly recommend doing this . There are several around the island and its a good way to hear local music and see the dance. You can't go wrong . The ticket is $25.00 each.

Cantina: Fun times and Late nights

There is nightlife, but when you're there when the yachties and tourists aren't, like November thru May, there's not much going on in Vava'u. Tonga Bob's Cantina has great (and the only) Mexican food, the cheapest beer and best liquor selection and shows sporting events on 2 televisions. I've had several 4am evenings there, and there's even a live band on fridays. The old crotchety folks go to Mermaid, young folks go to Tonga Bob's.
There's also one nightclub that's open until 4am and 2 others opening that are packed year-round with locals and expatriates.

In Neiafu (the main town in Vava'u) you will not find nightlife. It's a very quiet, sleepy town. You will have a hard time just finding restaurants that are open for dinner, especially on Sundays.
