Apparently most travellers miss out a visit to the Ha'apai Islands when in Tonga. Unfortunately I experienced pretty grim weather while I was there, however the beaches on Uoleva Island were still amazing. Uoleva Island is the next island immediately south of Lifuka. From Pangai (the main town - on Lifuka), you can get a boat (a dinghy with an outboard on the back), to Uoleva (I paid T$7.50 one way). I travelled there one afternoon with a Spanish photographer who was going to stay at one of only two 'resorts' on Uoleva. The Captain Cook Resort has changed its name to the Hideaway Resort. The place didn't look too appealing to me, but my Spanish friend was happy to go there. Just along the same stretch of beach is another resort (Jane's Resort - I think), which is newer (it's not in LP), and looked nicer. Apart from these very small resorts, no-one lives on the island. I should point out that the resorts are nothing more than guesthouses really, consisting of beach huts, a shower/toilet hut, and a place for cooking. So don't expect a 'resort' as such. If the weather had been nice, this would be a great place to stay - the ultimate beach getaway! I wandered along the northwest coast of Uoleva back to the northern tip where at low tide you can cross over to Lifuka. The beach was untouched. My footprints were the only marks in the sand. The west side is best for swimming. Crossing back to Lifuka takes a while. The LP tends to make it sound scarier and more risky than it is. Make sure you have reefers/shoes to cross the coral with. The hard part is the walk from the southern part of Lifuka back to Pangai! It is flat, but takes ages. There are an amazing amount of butterflies flitting around you as you walk back along a quiet dirt road. Leave a Comment
