Waterfront Cafe: Loved the red snapper

by easterntrekker

This was our favorite restaurant. The seafood was great and you can eat outside on the Verandah. The food is really inexpensive and the servings are big. They have a nice variety of wine an you can buy it by the glass. We enjoyed the snapper cooked in parchment paper.

Friends Cafe: The best coffee shop

by easterntrekker

This is a popular gathering place for the few tourists that are in town . You can sit and have a greta coffee and the sandwiches are really good too . We were disappointed to find it closed like most other places on Sunday

Only a handful to chose from...

by Sduarte

There are only a handful of restaurants to chose from in Neiafu. The Compass Rose is owned by a Canadian woman and seemed to be fairly popular (when it was open). She closed on Sundays and seemed to keep it closed for a few days after that for unknown reasons. The Mermaid is also a popular place. The food was average but dinning was harbour-side and very relaxing. Operating hours seem to be all over the place, sometimes they open, sometimes they don't. So when you're looking for dinner, you may have to look around for anything that's open.

Luna Rossa: Cucina italiana and more

by go_ahead71

High quality italian and seafood. Nice place with comfortable tables and professional management. Tuna fillet, wonderful. Home made pasta (tagliatelle) as you find only in Italy. Also, try the sashimi.

Any restaurants on Vuna Rd.,...

by Judgedeb

Any restaurants on Vuna Rd., which runs along the ocean front, are excellent. But try some local fare downtown in Nuku'alofa. Especially the Chinese!Prices at restaurants on the ocean front are a bit more expensive. There are some restaurants that will have a buffet of traditional Tongan food with Tongan cultural dancing. Great fun! The fish is always good and fresh everyday! Tuna abounds as does clams. The Chinese restaurants in town are a nice change. Stay clear of the road side Bar-B-Q's. The meat sits out for a long time. O.K. for Tongan stomachs, but hard on the rest of the worlds!

by peteyjim

Local Ovaka Food!Served to our work group by the local community of Ovaka,Va'vau The locals fed us home made octopus chowder, crab salad, fresh lobster and fish! The suckling pig was great too! There was also plenty of Taro, yams, sweet potato, and fresh fruit. Washed down with a chilled coconut, this was a top Tongan Feast

Langilangi's Guesthouse.: Langilangi's Guesthouse.

by worldkiwi

There is only one restaurant in all of Ha'apai and that is Mariners Cafe in Pangai, but most of the guesthouses will prepare a real Tongan dinner if you advise them early enough. So go in the afternoon and arrange a dinner for later at night. This place is known as Fonongava'inga Guesthouse in the Lonley Planet, and the food is amazing. Go with an appetitie and you won't be disappointed. Mrs Langilangi is a gem. The fish cooked in coconut cream and cheese sauce... oh my god - simply delicious!(the Taro chips weren't bad either)

Seaview Restaurant.: Seaview Restaurant.

by worldkiwi

Ok - it's expensive for the average backpacker, but you've got to go there once while in Nuku'alofa. The food is absolutely delicious. The courgettes cooked in olive oil were simply divine! The Salmon Steak -with vegetables.

Suliana: German restaurant

by go_ahead71

Really a wide menu. You can select from indian to italian or, of course, german specialities. All is quite good, and the service is excellent. Chicken curry.
