by RJGorringe There isn't really any 'Tourist Traps' in Tonga, but just know that the Good Samariatan Beach isn't the only beach in Tonga. Just keep looking, because there more to see than what you see on the brocheres... Leave a Comment

by PaulinVT There are NONE! Tonga has not yet been inundated by typical touristy stuff as yet. That's why it's the place to go. Leave a Comment

Taxi travel is very cheap in Tonga, with the supply far outstripping demand. You will get "approached" by drivers loking for fares - but it's all very friendly and non-threatening. Watch out though for the rates charged for to and from the airport - often charged in US$ rather than Tongan Dollars and about 4 times the gonig rate.
Always be prepared to bargain with the driver. Note that you can easily arrange a cheap taxi to take you on a tour of the island, or to one of the island nights. Leave a Comment

The first trap is when you land in Nuku'alofa. Taxi drivers from different "Guest houses" try to get you while you're disoriented from flying. My companion and I were taken to Tony's Guesthouse which is what you'd imagine a 3rd world prison cell to look like. We felt deceived and tried to leave, but Tony wouldn't let us go without paying him $30 Pa'anga. If you're wingin' it, go into town and figure out the best place to go. The second is a man in Neiafu, Vava'u named Lofi. I met Lofi on a bridge trying to have a quiet walk when he came up and started offering all of this stuff to me. At 8am the next day, he showed up at my rental house and showed me around the island (most of which i had seen) in my own car while smoking my cigarettes and stopping to cut down papayas and plantains (neither of which I asked for nor fancy). Then he stopped and asked for ten bucks and got 2 bags of kava and went back to my house and he ruined one of my T-shirts straining it. I awkwardly sat and drank it with him and then he asked for $100! I told him no and gave him $30 and showed him the door. He then told another "Noni" (which is Tongan for mosquito) to hit up my house for free money, asking for food money for his sick children. I instead gave him canned food and papaya which he took and threw into the road after he was out of sight. Lofi also showed up again and again until I got downright mean to him and his vagrant buddy. Stay away from Lofi. His first question is "Have you had Tongan beer?" which means Kava. To him. Punch him instantly and run!
