 | | | | Le Meridien Resort: Melanesian Feast | | | | | |
It doesnt matter where you go for this meal, but make sure while you are over there that you try a typical Melanesian Feast. You arent really going to experience the culture if you dont try their food. Its what they eat at special occasions, like New Years Day. And try the Kava! Its a special experience at the least!
I probably enjoyed the Kava the most out of this meal, however everything was good. Dont ask me the names, cause I cant remember, but i know it consists of yams, bananas, coconuts, chicken curry, salads etc. Its well worth the money and effort, especially if you check out the tribal dancing and band. I went to the Le Meridien Resort on Thursday night, well worth the extra money. | | | | Michener's Resaurant: Private Dinner | Satisfaction: | | | | |
We didn't eat from Michener's a la carte menu, but as part of our package, we received a complimentary candlelight dinner on our balcony. (Seems practically all guests get this inclusion.) This was arranged through Michener's Resaurant - we had a set menu to choose from, so we arranged the date and time and pre-ordered our 3-course dinner. They were quite punctual and the service was good but unfortunately, we were a bit disappointed with the food itself. Let's get the bad part out of the way first. The entree and dessert were OK, but the main was, well, terrible. My partner had the beef, which was not just rare, it was quite raw inside, and in addition to this it was just a bad cut of meat, gristley and chewy. I'd ordered the Wahoo fish wrapped in banana leaf, and I was fairly disappointed with this too, it was quite dry and inedible. However, the entree was reasonably filling. I had a smoked marlin and salmon salad which was actually rather delicious, and my partner had the coconut prawns, which was nice but we'd had better at Shooters. We both had the chocolate tart for dessert which was also delicious and a generous serving to boot. It was just a shame the meat was so inedible, it spoiled the evening a little bit. The service was good - the waiter went away after delivering each course and we just dialed the restaurant to get the next one, which was delivered within 5-10 minutes. We also received a complimentary bottle of Hardy's sparkling wine with the meal. It wasn't that nice, the complimentary Grandin we'd received on arrival at the resort was better.

 | | | | Michener's Resaurant: Melanesian Feast | Satisfaction: | | | | |
We didn't eat from Michener's a la carte menu, but we did have the Melanesian feast at Michener's. It started off with the with kava tasting, which we were going to skip since we'd already tried it the night before at a kava bar, but decided to have some again to compare. This was definitely weaker than the previous kava we'd tasted, but at least they provided fruit to wash away the bitter aftertaste! The Melanesian Feast was definitely the way to sample the local specialties, because we found it hard to source from the restaurants we went to, and the market was too confusing. Lap lap, tuluk, and various other names I don't quite recall. Aside from the starchy local food, there was also poulet, pork, the melanesian fish salad, and various other salads, and some beef. It was a huge buffet. The savoury foods were mostly local melanesian dishes, but the desserts were pretty standard western sweets. Sweets included chocolate mud cake, sponge, tart, and a couple of other things. The other bonus was the custom dancing. The "leader" of the dance group provided detailed and impassioned information about the history behind each dance, and its influence and significance in modern-day culture. I found his talks quite interesting, there still seems to be a fair amount of resentment surrounding the Christian missionary "invasion". And his take on the importance of conservation was quite inspiring.
Melanesian fish salad has to be the best local dish. The texture is creamy and divine, without it being too rich. And personally, I like the local pork better than the local beef, despite all the hype about the beef. Theme: LocalAddress: Iririki Island, Port VilaWebsite: www.iririki.com

 | | | | Michener's Restaurant: Breakfast at Michener's | Satisfaction: | | | | |
During our stay at Iririki Resort, a breakfast buffet was provided at either Watermark or Michener's restaurant. We ate at Micheners. The view, incidentally, was spectacular when we managed to get a window table. Included in the buffet was toast, cereal, milk, pineapple juice, apple juice, muffins, croissants, chocolate croissants, snail rolls, danish pastries, cooked beef or pork sausages (alternate days), bacon, and fruit (pineapple, paw paw, grapefruit). The coffee was drip filtered Tanna coffee (which was OK, but overhyped). You can download the full breakfast menu from the website.
I loved the pork sausages! And the snail rolls and croissants. And the pineapple was delicious! Theme: BuffetAddress: Iririki Island, Port VilaWebsite: www.iririki.com
