Shoal Bay, Shoal Bay

Everyone always talks about Shoal Bay and how great it is. True, the beach is nice, but there are better on the island. It is convenient to rent chairs and an umbrella, and the bar/restaurant nearby make it easy to pick up some beer and food, but this beach is second to Meads Bay, which is almost deserted. If you have to pick between on the other, head to Meads Bay

Fun Alternatives: Meads Bay

Be sure to get Eastern Caribbean dollars to spend rather than US Dollars. You will get a lot more for your money this way. Most pricing is listed and given in US Dollars, BUT
don't be afraid to ask for the 'EC' amount. They will gladly convert it for you.

It's about $1.73 EC for $1.00 Canadian and $2.68 EC for $1.00 US.

Anguilla is an expensive island. The taxes levied on products are higher than some islands and you can feel it as a comsumer. I took $600.00 EC for a week long stay
in the villa. I used it to eat out and buy food in the grocery store. I used it for gas,
treats, and gifts. Even though all was split between 3 people, we each left with money.

Scilly Cay is also a tourist trap. The concept is cool. Going to a separate island to have a meal and some drinks - why not? Well, it's about half the cost on the main island. I would suggest going there for a look around and perhaps a drink and then head back to eat at
'Smitty's' across from it on the main island. You can watch everyone paying more for the same meal you had for less.

Wallblake Airport
The taxis are pretty expensive and some make a good killing by charging $5 or more to take travellers from the little airport to the car hire outlets nearby(none at airport, thanks to the taxi drivers' cartel...). The nearest car hire outlet is no more than a few minutes' walk from the small terminal building.

Some tourists also visit Anguilla in order to set up an offshore account, trust or IBC. OK, fine, but be careful which trust company and/or law firm you use. Regulation is light and the firms vary much in their quality and probity. Do not make a decision based on factors such as the best website or office...

Of the three or four supermarkets on the island, the one with the lowest prices is the green-painted one by the crossroads stoplight in The Valley (Anguilla only has two or three sets of traffic lights). The others have more choice but are wildly overpriced on some items. Don't bother to use the small grocery store at Island Harbour...they will brazenly clip you of the proper change.
