  • Prettily painted shops in St John's - Antigua and Barbuda
    Prettily painted shops in St
    John's
    by mazzap
St John's is the capital of Antigua & is where all the visiting cruise ships dock. The town centre shops are a just a few minutes walk from the harbour & there are plenty here to suit all shoppers. Wooden & brightly painted, the town has a relaxed friendly atmosphere - there were some strange but seemingly harmless characters wandering around - a bit like home really, just steer clear!

We found the shop assistants all very friendly in St John's & all were very helpful too. They would happily chat to you & made you feel quite welcome in their family run shops.

We bought local craft souvenirs, nothing expensive really.

On your way down to English Harbour, look out for the designated viewpoint set on top of a hill, just up a few steps. It may have a name but I don't recall it! It's got a great view down to the sea & then you can stop & buy a T shirt as a souvenir! We didn't intend to get one but the ladies were just so funny & friendly that we felt we should!

I think possibly the taxi drivers do some kind of a deal with these people as ours seemed quite keen for us to take a look! It was worth it for the laugh though!

T shirts, local craft type souvenirs etc.

Inexpensive - but haggle of course, they expect you to!

    St Johns duty free area

  • St Johns duty free area isn't huge, but consists of the usual duty free jewellary sellers such as Columbian Emeralds, Diamonds Intl etc. There are also some smaller more local jewellers.

Other shops of interest was of course is the liquer shop to stock up on the rum to take home. An art shop, and various other handicraft and clothing outlets.

Unless you intend to do some serious shopping, a morning OR an afternoon will suffice.

If you want to take a little look ar around St Johns, then perhaps get there about 10am, and get picked up about 3pm - enough time for some shopping, some sighseeing, and lunch.

Most of the shops are filled with all the same stuff.

Liquor and cigarettes. Two of my daughters bad vices. Cig's were $13 a carton and liquor was cheap too!

  • They'll discount the ticket price somewhat, but thereis always another $50 to be squeeze out of them! - I saw it happen with 2 different shop assistants while we were there, where the customer was indecisive about the purchase.

The only place on the island to shop is in the islands capital St Johns

There is nothing much to shop for on Antigua.
In St Johns you will find the usual tourist souvenir shops and can also find duty free jewellery and drinks.

Make your way to Redcliffe Quay where the cruise ships dock and you will find plenty of jewellery / diamond shops to keep you busy.

Redcliffe Quay overlooks the harbour on one side, and is one of the oldest parts of St. John’s. The restored Georgian buildings are painted bright and vibrant colours. There is a yacht marina there now, but this was the main trading place for slaves, rum, sugar and coffee between Antigua, Europe and Africa.

Duty free shopping is much cheaper than Europe

Heritage Quay is a purpose-built shopping area in St John's. It is aimed firmly at the day-trippers who visit from the cruise ships, with most shops selling duty free products such as cosmetics and jewellery. There are a few shops which sell more local produce such as coffee and spices, but the prices are quite steep compared to those on the market in the centre. Even if you don't want to shop, it's a pretty place to wander around in.

Heritage Quay is quite expensive - try some of the shops or the market in the centre of town instead.

Visit the duty-free malls in St John's restored waterfront of Redcliffe Quay, which is excellent for local arts and crafts (palm-frond bowls, pottery, batik, woodcarvings), designer brands, fragrances (including frangipani perfume) and jewellery. More duty-free bargains such as island-aged rum, handicrafts and beachwear are available from Heritage Quay. It is only a short walk from the Quays to the centre of St Johns were there are numerous souvenier shops

Take home passion-fruit soap, handmade jewellery, Antiguan rum and Susie's Hot Sauce.
