Too many people for me by ktduncan The definition of a tourist trap. All sunburned tourists and no locals other than the ones working there. The food is good, local caribbean food, but at three times the price of what it normally should cost. It is so crowded with tourists that it is hard to find a seat. I don't know, we stayed for a while, checked out the view, listened to some music ate some food and took off. Stayed for maybe a half hour. I suppose that it is good local flavor for those making their one excursion from an all-inclusive, but we like to get out and dig the local flavor a little bit more.
Drive here, do not take a tour as you will be forced to stay longer than you may want to. We spoke with a couple that felt the same way as us, but their bus didn't leave for almost another two hours. And, if you like it, you can stay longer than your bus would otherwise.
After taking off we went and ate at the Inn at English Harbour. Nice table view of the sea and you could still hear the music up in the hills. Treat the Heights as an appetizer to your night in and around Nelsons Dockyard. Leave a Comment

Jolly Roger pirate cruise. Fairly good day although a bit pricey. I bought Linda a coral jewelery set which cost 3 times as much as it would have in St John's market. Leave a Comment

by vrage Make sure you know or negotiate the price of any item or service you buy. The best deals can be from beach vendors, but make sure you know up front. Leave a Comment

Don't waste your time & money on diving. The visibility is very poor & the coral is in bad shape from Hurrican Luis a few years ago. Barbuda would be a better choice. We snorkeled at Barbuda & saw a beautiful eagle ray (rare for that area from what we understand).

There is a lot more to Antigua than Dickenson Bay and Jolly Harbour. The resort areas are fine, with their beaches and tourist setup, but the rest of the island can be a lot of fun as well. I recommend at least seeing Shirley Heights, the Nelson Dockyard and areas on the southern side. Leave a Comment

This was the only tourist trap that we found on the whole island. All of Antigua's beaches are public beaches and tend to attract beach vendors selling anything from rum punches to cheap costume jewellery. They constantly patrol the beaches and are pesistent in trying to sell you something.
Be polite - a simple no thank you and they will be on their way. Leave a Comment
