Antigua and Barbuda Tourist Traps

  • St John's - Cruise ship days

You will need to check the cruise ship dates, but don't go into St John's on these days - it becomes so crowded and near the dock you get vendors selling the tourist rubbish. Stay away from the dock. I happened to visit during a cruise ship entry day and left almost instantly - I drove around a lovely coastal road, passing through Jennings and...

This was the only tourist trap that we found on the whole island. All of Antigua's beaches are public beaches and tend to attract beach vendors selling anything from rum punches to cheap costume jewellery. They constantly patrol the beaches and are pesistent in trying to sell you something. Be polite - a simple no thank you and they will be on their...

There is a lot more to Antigua than Dickenson Bay and Jolly Harbour. The resort areas are fine, with their beaches and tourist setup, but the rest of the island can be a lot of fun as well. I recommend at least seeing Shirley Heights, the Nelson Dockyard and areas on the southern side.

  • Don't waste your time & money...

Don't waste your time & money on diving. The visibility is very poor & the coral is in bad shape from Hurrican Luis a few years ago. Barbuda would be a better choice. We snorkeled at Barbuda & saw a beautiful eagle ray (rare for that area from what we understand).
