MALMOK BEACH

by LoriPori

THE best beach for snorkelling or learning how to windsurf is at MALMOK BEACH. The wreck of the Antilla , seen peeking out of the water, is a popular dive spot. This WWII German freighter was scuttled in 1940 and is the largest shipwreck in the Caribbean. Ten feet offshore, there are small coral bays filled with fish. The pirate ship Jolly Pirates was there at the time we visited. It is such a beautiful area. A group of big Pelicans just landed in the water and you could see them bobbing up and down with the gentle waves. Absolute paradise!!

CALIFORNIA LIGHTHOUSE

by LoriPori

Perched high atop a hill on Aruba's far northwest side, the CALIFORNIA LIGHTHOUSE is quite impressive. Views of the island are amazing from up here especially Malmok Beach with its turquoise coral reefs. The Lighthouse was built in 1910 and was erected on a plateau named Hudishibana. It was named after a steamship named California which went down just off the coast in 1891.The lighthouse is not open to the public.

aruba - general

by karenli82

just came back from aruba.. from 6/29/06 - 7/4/06.. it was awesome!! i would say the only con is that the island is a bit too windy.. other then that.. the trip was perfect.. the water is beautiful... snorkeling was great.. etc.. i have quite fair skin.. i used SPF 45 the 1st day.. then 40 the 2nd.. and then 30 and then 15 SPF sun tan oil and i got a great tan.. and no burning!! definitely do the de palm tours.. so much you can do.. its available at most hotels/resorts.. we went to de palm island (which i think a half day trip is enough).. dont waste your money on a full day.. we did sea trek and snorkeling and spent some time at the water park too.. and the other half of the day we just relaxed at the beach.. sea trek is great for people who dont know how to swim and would like to go under water 20 feet safely (ME).. you get to see fishes and experience how its like undersea.. i love...

Working Holiday

by RoyJava

Tourism still is the utmost important matter to Aruba. Thanks to the rapid growth of tourism a lot of activities took place and construction has boomed to hotel capacity.Yet the extra is the dimension of the resorts that "keep" the tourists within certain limits I guess ... it's good the Arubans do not get too close with hotel-industry, organized by others of tourist industry, with too much money. Arubans are so friendly with great hospitality. They beam forth their sunny and welcoming climate, taking care for their own ups and downs. So the work at the Renaissance Ocean Suites was like a holiday, mainly because of the great job for Harper's Bazar magazine, and the see-again with my brother, who lives at Paris and travelling all around the world for his own job. He's watching here with some other Hotel-members during our fashion-shooting while I hold the flash ...thanks Aruba, thanks...

Desert in The Caribbean?

by ByAirOrSea

Very clean, relatively modern, and a prosperous island. Little sign of poverty. The water is a beautiful clear blue, nice plentiful sandy beaches and many moderate to deluxe hotels on south and western side of the island. Not the typical tropical isle, rather like a bit of Arizona desert, cactus, a few palm trees, etc., surrounded by the sea. A decent airport, small town and casino right in town. Most time spent at hotel and beach area. Quite touristy and just off the coast of Venezuela.

Don't feed the iguanas

by hartmany

You'll find these usually harmless creatures freely roaming around the hotel grounds. The Marriot Hotel has an iguana sanctuary and has scheduled feedings you can watch. So when they come to your table, resist feeding them people food, it's not good for them.

de palm islands great way to spend some time

by suvaa003

de Palm islands, just a small islands just away from the coast lines from aruba, not far away from oranjestad, near the water factoryl. It is small but the snorkling is great.we payed 35 dollars a person for an afternoon, all included, food, drinks and yes alcoholic ones too, snorkling gear, chairs.( the food is plenty ful and tasty) some people just culd not stop eating. The boat ride is only five minutes. You cab arange the tour throug de palm tours or through your hotel, or just follow the sighns when you go directions st nicolas. But be aware of the cruise ship people

Typical Aruban home

by annk

Driving around the island. My favorite day was renting a jeep and driving around the island, including 4-wheeling on the north shore. It's not necessary to rent a vehicle for your whole stay, since the island is so small and public transportation is excellent. I would recommend renting a 4WD vehicle for a day, to explore more than the hotel areas and downtown, see the various beaches, shipwrecks, rugged and very deserty north shore, the small towns interconnected by dirt roads, simple homes with tin roofs or brightly colored and freshly painted ones as shown in the photo.
