L G Smiths Steak and Chophouse: Pre Theatre Delights

by SabrinaSummerville

L G Smiths Steak and Chophouse is one of a number of restaurants in the plush Renaissance Hotel. We ate here as park of a dinner/theatre package when we went to the Let's Go Latin night, but we were so happy with the meal, ambiance, and service that we would definitely return. You will be visually struck by the decor as soon as you enter the room. The overall theme is white, with very light wood. It really works and gives a cool and serene upmarket feel to the place. We had a wonderful table overlooking the harbour and I watched the sun set as one of the huge cruise ships left on its travels. Our waiter was very helpful in every way, advising on choices from the menu and also on the tickets for the show. There was a special pre theatre menu, though guests were free to swap items with other choices from the a la carte menu if they wished, paying the appropriate supplement. Unusually for me,...

Savannah: Ostrich With Everything!!

by SabrinaSummerville

Savannah is the name of the very African looking restaurant situated on the grounds of Aruba's Ostrich Farm. We stopped in here on a drive around the island and we were delighted that we did.The building is straw roofed and open to the air at the sides, so you can look out and admire the vegetation and perhaps even glimpse an ortrich at a distance. The decor is casual African style and huge wooden gisaffes and other animals adorn the room. Service is table service from a large bar in the centre of the room. It's really spacious so you are well away from everyone else.We chose a table at the side looking out onto big green fronds and children playing together in the heat. It was cool inside, however, and refreshing. It's a very different way to spend a couple of hours and enjoy really good food. There's also a gift shop selling genuine African artifacts. The prices of the food are most...

Pizza Bob's: Great Pizza

by SabrinaSummerville

Pizza Bob's was less than one minute's walk across the street from our hotel, so we found ourselves eating there a couple of times. The menu is "easy" food consisting of pizzas, a couple of pasta dishes, chicken wings and ribs. There's a full bar, too, and live music on Saturday nights. The first night I ate here the service was painfully slow, and I thought it was that typical Caribbean thing; but any time I visited after that the service was very efficient. This would be a very good place to come with kids, or when you just want something really light. I found the ribs really disappointing - not much meat on them at all, and very much overdone. The pizzas, however, are enormous and delicious. They cut the pizza into easy to handle squares instead of the usual triangles that seem to drop topping all over you.

Chalet Suisse: Welcome Home

by SabrinaSummerville

"Welcome Home." These are the words that greet every guest as they arrive at reception in Chalet Suisse, and from that moment the staff strive to make you feel entirely comfortable, to ensure that service to your table is quick and efficient and friendly, and to see that you enjoy every morsel of the delicious food served here. From the roadfront Chalet Suisse looks just like a very small and quaint Swiss Chalet on three levels, but this is pleasantly deceptive. The building is in fact huge, the longer side angled away from the streetfront. The size, however, does nothing to detract from the cosiness of the place. The decor is warm and friendly and the ceiling is beamed and open to view, thus lending a rustic feel to the whole place. There were a lot of locals dining here, which is always a good sign.I found the drinks waitress a little curt, which was a stark contrast to all the other...

Madame Janette: For People Who Love Great Food

by SabrinaSummerville

Everywhere you go in Aruba, people (especially locals) will ask you if you have been to Madame Janette's. So....we just had to try it. It has, after all, been consistedly voted the best restaurant in the Caribbean and has been awarded a bevy of gold medals by both Les Amis d'escoffier and rising culinary star of the year. When our taxi pulled up outside (having travelled a myriad of backroads in the pitch dark) it looked just like a straw roofed shack with locals sitting outside on benches (these turned out to be waiting taxi drivers). You walk through the door and find yourself in a modern, hopping, happy bar and restaurant full of both locals and tourists but overall a pretty upmarket crowd. At the very front there's a garden waiting area with tables and chairs made from old trees. You check in at the front desk and they give you a little space age disc. When your table is ready this...

Papiamento: Carribbean Cuisine at its Best

by SabrinaSummerville

Papiamento is the name of the native language of Aruba, and is also the name of what I have termed the prettiest retaurant in Aruba. One of the main reasons that I booked this restaurant is because it is owned and run by the Ellis family, and Ellis is the family name of my Mother. The reasons that I would return again and again are that the food is incredible and the setting is a fairytale paradise. We were seated in the garden area of this beautiful property, surrounded by lush vegetation strung with white fairy lights. Everywhere you looked there were shady gazebos, trellises intertwined with flowers, and bird houses hidden behind leaves. The sound of a tiny stream trickled somewhere in the background and flaming torches reflected in the swimming pool. The tables were set with white linen covered with heavy damask cloths. Large hurricane lamps sat atop the lot and the tables were set with...

Mathilde: Divine and Delectable

by SabrinaSummerville

Chez Mathilde was one of the most respected and desirable restaurants on Aruba for very many years. Very upmarket and very luxurious, it was a habitat of the rich and famous.Recently the establishment decided to go for a more modern image and renovated the whole place, dividing it in two.The part known as "M" is situated at the front of the building, is designed to be a little more casual (the decor struck me as bistro style), and is aimed at a younger or more casual crowd. The back part of the restaurant, "Mathilde", is decorated in light coloured wood - wooden walls, wooden floors, with huge gold pillar-type structures that are in fact enormous planters. Paintings on the walls are mainly caribbean style and of young Caribbean faces. There's a baby grand piano here with live music and flowers appear to adorn every available flat surface. The flowers are glorious - the shelf beside my...

L.G. Smith's Steak and Chop House: LG Smiths

by MrRandMcnally

A nice Contemporary place fight on the water with views of the harbour, LG Smiths havd very good food but the atmosphere was not really to my liking, It had a cold steralness to it with contemperary archetecture and Flat screens playing psycadelic screensavers. The food was great though and they have the best the wine list I saw on the Island.

El Gaucho Argentinian grill: Big old Steaks

by MrRandMcnally

I know, I know, you don't go to an Island to have steak, you should go for the seafood, but I'm a sucker for Argentinian grills and this place did not disapoint. The steaks were big, juicy and satisfing. They also had a band playing seranades. Very enjoyable evening

Cuba's Cooking: Like Cuba but Farther south

by MrRandMcnally

Cuba's Cooking is a fun place with live salsa or Son music, good Cuban food and Great drinks, Try the Mango Daquiri. A good place for dinner but even better for drinks and music.I joke and say it's like Cuba and I see beaple all the time write things like, "It will make you feel like your in Havana" But really, the food and drinks are much better at this resturant in Aruba than in Havana itself.
