California Lighthouse --in Aruba!

by crazyman2

You can't go up in any more due to someone jumping from the top in recent years. However, the view from here is terrific! There's a cafe etc 100m from the lighthouse. The ground around is a bumpy mix of tough, short grass and a white shale of some sort ---so if you need a buggy or you use a walking frame you should take advice from your tour guide. Of course, a taxi driver will take you to nearly the foot of the lighthouse. This is my second visit to Aruba and my first to the lighthouse.Would I visit it again? Probably not unless the weather was unusual and I felt like taking some appropriate photos.

Ostrich Farm

by diver-x

Visiting the Ostrich Farm was not tops on our list of things to do in Aruba as we planned the trip. In fact we had no idea there was one until we got there and saw some signs for it on the road. But as was got into our comfortable routine of diving in the morning and exploring the island in the Jeep in the afternoon, there came a day when we were in the neighborhood so we decided, "What the heck, let's check it out. How bad could it be?" Well, not bad at all, surprisingly! We really had a blast! Maybe we got lucky because we were the only customers there at the time. Our guide was very funny and kept us laughing the whole time. And we learned a bunch about ostriches. The farm breeds the ostriches so we got to see the birds at every stage of life from egg to adult. And the highlight was when our guide gave us each a big bowl of feed to hold and instructed us one at a time to turn our...

Eagle Beach

by SabrinaSummerville

Aruba has plenty of easily accessible beaches, as it's a very small island. That saying, some of them are pretty dangerous as the waters are very rough. My personal favourite beach is Eagle Beach. It's in the low rise hotel area and consists of mile after mile of perfect white sandy beach. The waters here are deeper than off Palm beach. It's also a far more peaceful area as it never gets crowded like Palm beach. This was my favourite place to go to watch the brown pelicans dive for fish and to watch the sun set - sometimes both at the same time:-)

PICK UP BALASHI BEER BOTTLES

by DAO

Help beautiful Aruba stay that way – beautiful. You can do your part and get paid! What a bargain. Balashi Beer has a deposit on their BEER bottles. Oddly I found zillions of these laying around. I founds a rubbish bin full of them (pictured) and loads cast off in natural beauty spots. So, you can clean up after some idiot and get paid for it. The best thing? Balashi tastes great! So keep Aruba clean and Balashi recycling!

nightlife

by giselle900

Although it is not alway easy to find out what is going on, keep your eyes open. Your resort and front desk should be able to tell you what areas have specials going on. I was lucky enough to have an activities coordinator inform me that Moomba Beach has two nights a week that have outdoor parties right onthe beach. It has live music, dancing, and plenty of tv's to catch the soccer (football) match all outdoors.

Strange rock formations

by Kisu

I really didn't make this myself... There are thousands and thousands of this kind of formations. They look that someone has built them but locals say that they don't have any idea why or how those exist in only one part of the island and how they have been created. But they know for sure that they are created by the nature itself during years...but how come they don't collapse in a hurricane or any strong wind...?

snorkling

by giselle900

Although there are many snorkeling trips available, the one I chose was with the Jolly Pirates. Its was the afternoon half day trip and more than enough time for me to relax, snorkle in three different spots, and make use of the swing rope off the side of the ship. There are coupons for this trip in the coupon book that is offered at the airport so you can save yourself $5 or $10 bucks. The crew was very friendly and entertaining. I would say it is a beginner-intermediate snorkling trip. Downside? They are one of the few excursions that dont pick up at your hotel and bring you to the site.

Morning Star sailboat/snorkeling

by Mrs007

We spent a wonderful afternoon sailing on the Morning Star. Although they said the water was a little choppy, I throughly enjoyed the day. We sailed up towards the lighthouse past all the resorts. Katrin (the chef) made sure there were plenty of snacks during the sail - LOVED the pineapple sprinkled with cinnamon. When Marci (the captain) found a suitable place, he dropped anchor and off we went to snorkel. The water is wonderfully clear and there were fish all over the place. Of course it might have been that Marci was following my snorkeling progress from on deck and was throwing bread crumbs into the water around me so the fish were surrounding me :) After the snorkel, we climbed back onboard and Katrin had a wonderful dinner prepared for us. There were only 4 of us on the boat (besides Katrin and Marci - so a total of 6) which made for a fabulous day of being totally spoiled.

Bushiribana Ruins

by Dabs

Our tour didn't stop here but our guide gave us a little history as we were driving by, he said it wasn't really safe to climb around inside the ruins as they were unstable. The structure that now lies in ruin was built as a gold smelter for the English owned Aruba Island Goldmining Company in 1872, it was only operational for about 10 years.

Natural Pool

by Dabs

Although you might be able to get to the Natural Pool (conchi) on your own, it certainly is easier when you have a guide leading the way. We visited with DePalm tours, we also saw people on an ATV tour. You can't get here with a regular car but you can with a jeep, the terrain is VERY rocky getting to the Natural Pool. Follow the signs for conchiOnce you get there, you still need to walk down a long flight of stairs. I highly recommend aqua shoes that you can go into water with, the guys on our tour with tennis shoes probably had soggy salty shoes for the rest of their trip and you wouldn't want to climb down in bare feet.I was expecting an extremely calm pool of water but it was anything but, be careful if the waves are crashing over the top of the rocks into the pool, if the sea is that rough then there is a fairly strong current in the Natural Pool.
