Daily Nation by luke850 When in Barbados, it is an excellent idea to read the local papers. From these papers you can get a feel for what life is like there, and you can find out which events are forthcoming. I found out about loads of great events from the papers when i was there, such as pig racing, an event where people actually ride pigs in races! There are two main papers, the Daily Nation and The Sun. Leave a Comment

Tap Water Is Good! by luke850 The water in Barbados is clean and healthy, and therefore makes buying over priced bottled water a waste of time. The only tip i would give is to fill up a jug with the tap water and put it in your fridge, if you have one in your room. This is because the water can be a bit warm when it comes straight from the tap. Leave a Comment

Rum Shack - Barbados by luke850 On the island of Barbados all glass bottles are sent back to the factories, re-filled and sent out again. Bars and rum shacks pay a small deposit for each bottle, which they get back when they return the bottles. So they do not lose this deposit, bar and rum shack owners add 25c to the price of a drink if they think that the bottle may be removed from their establishment. If you make it clear to the owner that you will be staying in their place of business and returning the bottles to them, they should knock 25c of the price of each drink. This could save you a fair amount if you like a beer or two! Leave a Comment

Getting money out in Barbados is extremely easy. You can take money out of your credit card at a number of large banks on the island, and use it in some hotels and restaurants. However, many places charge a little for this service, but it isn't much. Leave a Comment

The fringes and reefs found off Barbados blossom with healthy sponges, coral and plant life. There are several types of reefs - barrier reefs, fringing reefs and artificial reefs. There are also a few wrecks to see! http://barbados.org/diving.htm
My fondest scuba memory is the first wreck dive I did. A ship called the Pamir, off Heywoods in St. Peter. Cause it was one of my first dives, it's one I will always remember..

chattle houses in the north by Aphro The houses! These were originally designed by poor locals who worked on the plantations. When they had to move to another plantation to find work, they could take the house apart and transport it with them. Now many are gone but those left are often lovingly restored and some have historical status. Leave a Comment

Chicken George eatery by joanj I did not know whether to put this under Restaurant tip or not, as it is strictly not a restaurant, but just a place to get a snack on the beach. So here goes :- If you are in the parish of Christchurch and on Rockley Beach, and you want a quick snack, local beer, or soft drink, then check out Chicken George. In the car park area there are little huts selling food, drink, clothing, jewellery, beach items ets. Go check them out. photo joanj

If you need to be in touch with home, there are several Internet Cafe's around. If you are in the Hastings area (Christchurch) there is a small shop just with 5 monitors, facilities for telephoning abroad, and faxing, copying etc. I paid BDS$10. for a 75minute card, which is good value for money. I cannot remember the name of it, but it is opposite Hastings Plaza, and very near to OPA - a greek restaurant. Also in Bridgetown there is Bean-n-Bagel on the Wharf , Bean-n-Bagel at the West Coast Mall - Holetown, and Bean-n-Bagel Internet Cafe at St. Lawrence Gap (Christchurch) so if you are in those areas, check them out, and keep in touch with home.
