electricity

by joanj

Electricity on Barbados is110 volts AC, 50 cycle.you will need adaptors as they are 2flat pin, and not the type used in UK.If you are taking out any electrical items, you may need to purchase a voltage reducer, I bought one from a local electrical outlet for approximately ?15.

Take a ride by the shore!

by mirah

Take a ride by the shore! Say that you don't dare and get five minutes for free... Choose to go with someone of your own taste. I'd take this man, Mr Good Price, looked really good, Dover beach! ;-)

Blue Waters

by Hewer

The ocean is BLUE unlike anything you've seen. I've been to some diverse places but nothing matches this. Like a swimming pool...no bluer still! It's the depth of the water, the sunlight and the composition of the sand (among other reasons) that all make this possible - whatever it is though, it's amazing. This photo was taken on somebody's private property between Rockley and Worthing(I am sure they are sick of people photographing their house ;-)

Get out there

by stopatnothin

Take advantage of the island. Get out of the hotel and do some exploration. There is a bit of gambling, though nothing extreme in Bridgetown as well as some of that duty free shopping. Besides dining at Daphnes, lunching at Sandy Lane, touring the Coral Reef Club and The Crane???Ahh yes, dessert at Daphnes.Seriously, Barbados is one of those island that has not been taken over by the massive tourism wave and remains a bit on the upscale side without being stuckup and snooty.

try natural aloe vera for bites and sunburn

by emmabee

you will no doubt be offered various things for sale when your sunbathing on the beach I reccomend natural aloe vera for your sunburn and bites but don't let the guys rub it on you on the beach cos you will burn more , wait til you have showered in the evening! all the friendly faces and the calmness of the place. The pic shows a yellow bird in the gardens of our hotel.

Hurricane shelter - hopefully not needed

by joanj

In the unlikely event of you being on the island during hurricane season, it is wise to seek out where the nearest shelters are.Of course if you are in a hotel then reception will guide you through procedures. If however, you are staying in private dwellings/rented apts. etc. then look out for them. The one pictured here is right in the heart of Bridgetown, there is also another shelter in the church at St. Lawrence Gap.Please enlarge this photo - this shelter is in a church nr. to Queen's park. Bridgetown

Internet Cafe's

by joanj

If you need to be in touch with home, there are several Internet Cafe's around. If you are in the Hastings area (Christchurch) there is a small shop just with 5 monitors, facilities for telephoning abroad, and faxing, copying etc. I paid BDS$10. for a 75minute card, which is good value for money. I cannot remember the name of it, but it is opposite Hastings Plaza, and very near to OPA - a greek restaurant. Also in Bridgetown there is Bean-n-Bagel on the Wharf , Bean-n-Bagel at the West Coast Mall - Holetown, and Bean-n-Bagel Internet Cafe at St. Lawrence Gap (Christchurch)so if you are in those areas, check them out, and keep in touch with home.

Harrison's Cave

by MaineIslandgal

Harrison's Cave is located in the parish of St. Thomas. A great way to spend a few hours away from the beach, Harrison's Cave was made tourist friendly by the government in the late 1970's. A guided tram ride through the limestone cave lasts about one hour. The tour is informative as well as interesting. If you have never seen a cave before you will be impressed. If you have been in a cave before you may be a tad disappointed, smaller scale than the larger caves in the southern US.

scuba diving

by stiab3

The fringes and reefs found off Barbados blossom with healthy sponges, coral and plant life. There are several types of reefs - barrier reefs, fringing reefs and artificial reefs. There are also a few wrecks to see!http://barbados.org/diving.htm My fondest scuba memory is the first wreck dive I did. A ship called the Pamir, off Heywoods in St. Peter.Cause it was one of my first dives, it's one I will always remember..

Enjoy the beach and the sea....

by stiab3

Enjoy the beach and the sea. Lots to do there. scubadiving, waterskiing, surfing, snorkelling, windsurfing etc.And if you get the chance, go swimming with the turtles off Speightstown! The sea, the people, the nightlife!
