Leave Your Beer Bottles

by luke850

On the island of Barbados all glass bottles are sent back to the factories, re-filled and sent out again. Bars and rum shacks pay a small deposit for each bottle, which they get back when they return the bottles. So they do not lose this deposit, bar and rum shack owners add 25c to the price of a drink if they think that the bottle may be removed from their establishment. If you make it clear to the owner that you will be staying in their place of business and returning the bottles to them, they should knock 25c of the price of each drink. This could save you a fair amount if you like a beer or two!

Read The Local Papers

by luke850

When in Barbados, it is an excellent idea to read the local papers. From these papers you can get a feel for what life is like there, and you can find out which events are forthcoming. I found out about loads of great events from the papers when i was there, such as pig racing, an event where people actually ride pigs in races! There are two main papers, the Daily Nation and The Sun.

The Smoothest Clear Warm Water

by ByAirOrSea

Extremely warm, friendly locals, quite proud of their island. Still typically poor as is usual most Carib. islands, but generally clean and a general feeling of personal safety. Shopping for tourists and one-day cruise stops in the capital Bridgetown has much improved over the years. The western side of the island has many (most) of the nice hotels on the island. This would be to the north of the capital which is Bridgetown. Also, the calmest smoothest water (Carib. side of the island) I've ever seen, like glass, with nice beaches just steps from hotel rooms. A great place to relax, enjoy the sun and water, great rum, pleasant scenery for some short touring of the island. The eastern side (facing the Atlantic) has more typical waves and less beaches and seems cooler and breezier.

The incomparable all-rounder

by CliffClaven

As soccer and basketball become more popular throughout the West Indies, the islands' love of cricket is steadily waning, especially among the young. But the old timers still go misty eyed as they remember the great of Barbados cricket. And none was so great as Sir Garfield Sobers, who scored more than 8000 runs and took more than 200 wickets for the West Indies in Test cricket, in the days when Test matches were not so frequent.

Chattel houses

by Aphro

The houses! These were originally designed by poor locals who worked on the plantations. When they had to move to another plantation to find work, they could take the house apart and transport it with them. Now many are gone but those left are often lovingly restored and some have historical status.

Do take a tour of the island and see the beautiful landscape, beaches and villages.I done a day trip with Ted from Coco-nut Court hotel at Hastings. He was born on Babados and he took us around the coast and we saw great scenery and how the coastline dramatically changes as you travel round. We also stopped at a village on market day and was shown the huge variety of fish and veg.We then stopped at a stunning beach and relaxed. Do do a tour of the island and see how locals live and the real Barbados. You will enjoy it. Here is Ted showing us some of the locally caught fish.....

There are four major festivals in Barbados. The largest is Crop over.A revival of the traditional celebration of the sugar cane harvest. This starts the season of the decorated cart parade and loads of street parties. Then Kadooment Day starts with costumed people and parades from dawn til dusk. For more info ,call the National Cultural Foundation tel:424-0909. In Febuary, the Holetown Festival starts and it commemorates the first settlers who landed in 1627.A week of performances end with a two day street fair. The Oistins Fish Festival brings a carnival atmosphere to a small village through the easter weekend.People have fishing contests and stalls sell local produce and home cooked foods. The National Independance Festival of Creative Arts celebrates Barbadian Independance each november with dancing competitions, drama, art, writing etc.

by rachel_sun

Here is the catamaran that we had a day out on.It was a 5 hour cruise all inclusive. We went with Stiletto Cruises and the boat had a huge deck, shade and a close-mesh trampoline. We set sail and stopped to swim with turtles and then we had a beautiful buffet lunch with some great rum cocktails. We then set sail again along the beautiful coastline and stopped again to snorkel and feed the tropical fish by hand. The drinks kept flowing all day and the crew were great and the music that they played made the trip fun and party like. The whole trip cost £30.Do do this as it was the best day of my holiday. It was so relaxing just laying on deck with a great rum drink and seeing the wonderful coastline go by. Jolly Roger cruises do a pirate cruise on a traditional wooden scooner ship with sails. You get to rope swing, party and dance, lunch on great food and an open bar.You can join in the pirate fun...

Soccer on the Race Track

by pilgrim55

In Bridgetown there are horse races at the race track during Christmas week. It is free for any one that wants to go, but you have to pay if you sit in the stands. When they aren't having races there, the boys play foot ball or soccer in the grassy area in the center of the race track. We have seen people jogging around the race track too.It is there for every one to enjoy!

Go to church in Barbados

by pilgrim55

We went to Mass at this beautiful cathedral that was built for the Irish who were brought over as endentured servants to cut sugar can for the British. It is a beautiful cathedral with a lovely manger scene near the front of the church. During the Mass, the priest called the children to all come up to the manger and got them to tell him who everybody was in the scene. Even snakes that could bite you and monkeys were in the manger with the baby Jesus, because, as the priest explained to us, Jesus came for every thing and every one...even the ones that are mean and might bite you.The church was filled to capacity and all the local people were dressed in their very finest. Little girls wore satin dresses with ribbons in their hair. The people were very friendly and went up and down the aisles shaking everybody's hands and when they sang it was truly in a beautiful Caribbean rhythm.The...
