A must-do in Barbados, even if...

by Hazel_Wright

A must-do in Barbados, even if you are all-inclusive, is to go to one of the 'dollar nights' at the Boatyard, or the Harbour Lights. You pay about $BDS 30-35 (about £10-12), and all drinks are free. There is a live band and the clubs are set right on the beach, so you can go dancing in the sand. It's a fantastic night out. On Millenium Eve we went to a party at the Ship Inn, in St. Lawrence Gap. We were dancing under the stars and at midnight there was a huge fireworks display. After the party, everyone went to the beach at 4am.

When in Barbados you can take many tours to the sights and tourist atractions, but it is better to rent a mini-moke and get out there yourself, you will for sure get to places you didn't think of, and it is pleasure just to see local people wave to you when you drive by slow.

Surf. East coast is full of good uncrowded waves, although not for the inexperienced. West Coast is also good but not as consistant. The people, warm and welcoming. It seems as though tourism exists here without the greed and selfishness that usually accompany it. Although I say this spending 95% of my trip on the East coast away from the masses.

Visit one of the many beaches. These are two of our friends, Ken & Connie who were on the cruise with us. The beach our taxi driver took us to was breath taking. There was a long stretch of white sand, meet at the shore by a warm, aqua blue water. You could walk out a great distance and still only be waist deep while the soft sand is at your feet. You could also just sit on the shore and let the water gently flow over you. There was only one other couple on the beach that day. We felt like it was our own private beach.

smike's General Tip

This photo is a picture of school children in line. They were all dressed in the same colorful uniforms. I am not sure - but I think there were different color uniforms for different grade levels. They all looked so good, standing in a straight line with such bold color uniforms.

Oistin's on Friday night is great! This is a short taxi or shared van ride from St. Lawrence Gap. It's an outdoor place where tons of people enjoy fresh fish fried right in front of you with Bajan spices. It is so YUM! Sometimes there's live music (awesome soca). Banks beer goes really great with the fish!

Go to the beaches!! There are gorgeous pink sand beaches all over Barbados and even if you cannot afford to stay on the fabled 'gold coast' to the West, you can visit beaches such as Mullins to experience the perfection. We rented a waverunner and took it out to sea, it was great! There are also boats that leave to see the turtles. There is the beach bar, so you can get drinks and food. The best thing about getting to the beaches on the west COast is driving through Holetown,I liked looking at the Chattel Houses and all the lavish Hotels in the area. For more action, the beaches on the South coast usually have more people, but they are equally as gorgeous, just a bit crowded at times.I like the South Coast beaches because we met so many people while we were there, and from our hotel or guest house we could walk to it in the early morning and have the beach to ourselves! These beaches are for...

Talk with people, listen to their stories, don't believe them all though! :-) We found a great sense of humour and had a lot of really good laughing. Fun people (many of them!) and of course the splendid beaches and beutiful sea.Why not rum & coke in a nice bar by the sunset...

The caves in the centre of the Island are a must. Small roadways beautifully laid out for the small train that takes you through there with a guide, from there it's only a small drive to 'GUN TOWER HILL' from where most of the island can be seen. The entire island is a fond memory. Since it's only 24 miles long and 14 miles wide. As small as it is, It's full of fun places. The CAREENAGE in the harbour of Bridgetown, has many resaurants, bars and clubs. The real place for night life is at the LAWRENCE GAP. Of course the beaches are unforgettable.

i visited barbados as part of a caribbean cruise.sowe were here for one day so we wanted to make the mostof it. we walked into bridgetown from the docks it wasextremely hot but we saw the locals. bridgetown is very british with a statue of nelson in a trafalgarsquare.also you have the famous cricket ground to visit we then went on a coach tour of some of the parishes around the island st johns,st andrews where you will find morgan lewis's mill. harrisons cave an underground palace of stalacites, pools and cascades. i found the people of barbados most helpful. the terrain of the island is unpredictable.
