This is one of two Jacobean plantation houses in Barbados. There are only three in the Western hemisphere. (The other Bajan one is Drax Hall and the third one in the Western Hemisphere is Bacon's Castle in Virginia)
Built in 1650, it is not an Abbey at all, and never was. It is surrounded by sugarcane fields and has been in the same family for many years. Check out the family history on the website below.
Distinguishing features are: curved Dutch gables, chimney stacks and coral stone finials. Inside, there is a Chinese Chippendale staircase and fine antiques and china. There is a particularly interesting example of an early 'recliner' (photo 2). The gardens and outbuildings are also interesting (photos 3 to 5).
In 1996, when we visited, they showed a rare 1930 movie of life on the plantation at 11:00 am. In 2006, I got an email from simon112 which said "Please be advised that St. Nicholas Abbey is under new ownership and Management." and gave the URL below with updates.
