Explanation !

by joanj

Let me explain to you folk who read my pages and my references to cricket. Cricket was introduced to the colonies almost two centuries ago by the British Military. Now here is an explanation of the game !!!!"You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in, goes out and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out. When both sides have been in and out including the not-outs, that's the end of the game." HOWZAT !!!Now you ALL understand this game of cricket - yes ? .

Anyone for rugby?

by joanj

If you are a member of a rugby club, Barbados welcomes opposing touring teams. I do not have photo's but I know someone who used to play rugby for one of the island teams. Play is usually on the Garrison Savannah, and you can watch them on training days. too.If anyone from a club is interested in taking a touring side to Barbados, and to combine it with a holiday, please ask me and I can provide you with the information, contacts etc.

Cricket anyone ?

by joanj

If you are a member of a cricket club, then I would thoroughly recommend that you take a touring cricket team to Barbados. As an Island of cricket lovers, and they certainly know their cricket, you will have a wonderful time. They welcome touring teams. The local people are so friendly, and our first trip in l985 was with our local cricket team, plus families, supporters etc.(about 45 of us in all), and the opposition teams were great.Look out for advertisements in any cricket magazine, we went with Fred Rumsey. Why not do as we did, combine a cricket tour with a holiday, you may just end up like us, visiting annually. contact me if you want any info. and I may be able to help steer you in the right direction.

Horse Racing

by luke850

The horse racing circuit in Barbados is called the Garrison Savannah, which is in the parish of St Michael. There are usually meets on a satuday, but are also a number of special events, such as the Gold Cup, which is often seen throughout the world. The circuit is excellent and makes for an enjoyable day out. Entry ranges from $10 BDS - $25 BDS.

Dive the Stavronikita

by dracko

The S.S. Stavronikita is a 365ft Greek freighter that burned down and was subsequently sunk back in the 70s as an artificial reef. The Stav, is probably one of the most spectacular wrecks I have ever dived. It sits perfectly upright in 140ft of water at the sand. All the more remarkable is the fact that its fore mast reaches all the way up to only 18ft! As you descend, there're several levels that can be dived, including the lower part of the ship at 130, the deck at 100, the bow and some of the superstructure at ~75ft, and up and down the masts all the way up to your safety stop. The deck is the most interesting part of the wreck, though. The wreck is still in amazingly good shape, and there're lots of swimthroughs, cabins, ladders, and other features to explore. The giant open cargo bays beckon, and the ship just begs to be dived and explored again and again. We only did one dive on...

Scuba Diving in Barbados

by dracko

If you're a diver, you will definitely want to make a few dives while you're on Barbados. Just about all diving to be done on the island is from boat. I heard there're a couple of shore sites, but I'm not sure where they are. There're quite a few reefs, and several wrecks. We only dove one of the wrecks, the S.S. Stavronikita, which is an exceptional wreck, and as cuh gets a tip of its own; but there're several more, including Pamir in the North, about 4 wrecks bunched together in Carlisle Bay in the South, and one or two others I may have missed. The reefs are nice, and have a nice variety of marine life and corals, but they are not as nice and lush as those in Bonaire, for example. They're still worth a few dives, though, as there're lots of interesting things to see. The water is warm year round, it was 84F in late October, and visibility is very good as well - it stayed around 70ft...

Surf the Soup Bowl

by pilgrim55

The best surfing in Barbados is at the Soup Bowl at Bathsheba, St. Joseph parish. Most of the waters off the east coast are treacherous and too dangerous for any kind of swimming, but the soup bowl is a great place to surf.

All kinds of sporting adventures

by 1Nomad

Although, we were not able to get any pictures of this, if your into horse racing, they do have a small track there. We didn't stop so we can't help you with this much. If your into beach sports, there's plenty of opportunities for volleyball or any other sport you would see at any beach. They also have small sailboats to rent, and windsurfing equipment. You'll also find ample opportunities for scuba, para-sailing and snorkeling. There's also jet skis for those who enjoy that. If you go out on one of the catamaran trips, they have available plenty of life jackets and snorkeling gear. They work just fine. If you have trouble using equipment that everyone else have used, you probably will want to bring your own.

Scuba diving with Reefers and Wreckers in Speightstown is great fun - the gang is great, the dive sites lovely and the whole thing is very easy going.
