Codrington College

by nsbm

Codrington College was completed in 1745. It was the first Theological College in the world for Anglican Communion. The college is named after Christopher Codrington III, the son of a plantation owner who was also the Governor General of the Leewards. The College is currently part of the Theological department of the University of the West Indies and holds a treasure trove of Christian theological history in the West Indies.

Gun Hill Signal Station

by nsbm

The largest military garrison in Barbados located St George parish dating from 1697 was the key chain in the islands defence. It offers a sweeping 360 panorama across the entire island. The manicured garden and canons add reality. You can climb inside and peep thru the portholes for a military point of view. Easily reached as day tour via private taxi hire or part of group.

St Nicholas Abbey

by nsbm

St Nicholas Abbey is located on cherry tree hill. The sugar and rum museum are adjacent to the Jacobean mansion dating from 1660! It remains one of the best glimpses of plantation life in the Caribbean...so where's UNESCO?

Parliament

Located in the centre of Bridgetown the stone clad Neo-Gothic landmark was built in 1871 and houses the Senate and Assembly. The stained glass windows apparently contain portraits of British monarchs!

Glass Bottom Boat tour

by Dabs

This was the highlight of our day, the first stop was at the shipwreck where they throw food over the side to gather up the fish, mostly of only two varities, the yellow and black striped Sgt. Majors and another larger bluish white fish. We got out and snorkeled here, surrounded by hundreds and hundreds of fish that are so immune to humans that you can reach out and touch them. The 2nd stop was the coolest thing I've done in a long time, they take you to where the turtles swim and I'm thinking that it's one of those maybe you'll see one on the bottom type of experiences but there were a whole herd of green turtles swimming in the waters and they would come right up to you swimming over and under you and in one case swimming right up to me and staring at me in the face. I was a little scared at first, after all the snapping turtles I'm using to seeing would have probably snapped all of my...

Glory Tours

by Dabs

I had a little trouble getting comfirmation of our tour with Glory, a couple of days before we were scheduled to leave I was starting to get a little panicky and my oh so sensible husband suggested that maybe I should call them. Hmm, why didn't I think of that???That was the only glitch with this tour, our guide was where he was supposed to be and we got a private taxi tour of the island with Colin from Bridgetown all the way around along the rugged east coast, stopping for Kodak moments at Cherry Hill, Bathsheba. Lunch, included on the tour, was at the Sand Dune and we headed after that back along the north coast and back to _______ where we picked up the glass bottom boat tour.

Gun Hill Lion

by joanj

On the road up to Gun Hill Signal Station, you pass this lion on the hillside. (The station is to the left and higher up the hill). The Lion is made of white limestone, and was sculpted in 1868 by Henry Wikinson, the Adjutant - General of the Imperial Forces stationed in Barbados, from one single piece of rock. Two inscriptions are carved in the rock at the lion's base. The first includes the name of the sculptor, his rank and the date he completed the project. Then there is the affirmation - "It (the British Lion) shall rule from the rivers to the sea, and from the sea to the ends of the earth"An inscription to the right of the sculpture (just visible) lists the four military workers who helped Wilkinson. This the walkway up to the Gun Hill Military Signal Station. It was erected in 1818 and was restored by the Barbados National Trust in 1982.The Road leading to this entrance, is called Fusilier Road, and was built by the Royal Scots Fusiliers, the Twenty First Regiment, during their stay at Gun Hill from September 1862 until February 1863. After climbing the steps up to the station itself, it affords wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. It now houses a collection of military memorabilia. There is also a small cafe. From January to May on Friday evenings nearest to the full moon, the Trust holds full moon cocktail parties on the terrace from 5.30pm. complete with sundown taps played by members of the Zouve Band of the Barbados Regiment. All visitors are welcome. The entrance fee is $30 for non members and $20 for members, including drinks and hors d'ouvres..Photo by joanj

Andromeda Botanic Gardens

by grandmaR

Andromeda Gardens is run by the Barbados National Trust. Andromeda was developed in 1954 by the late horticulturist Iris Bannochie for her weekend retreat. It soon became a memorable garden and she opened it to the public. She left the property to the National Trust in 1988. It is named for the Greek goddess Andromeda who was chained to a rock - probably because of the huge limestone boulders in this area. When we went it was part of the Heritage Pass ticket. However we had already used up our tickets, so we had to pay. Entry fee is now about $12BD for adults, $6BD for children; free for kids age 5 and underThe garden spreads over six acres and contains orchids, exotics and shrubs. It is one of the finest collections of plants in the region. Hours: 9am-5pm daily; no admittance after 4:30pm There is a Best of Barbados shop and also a small cafe at the garden entrance.
