Goto a local Rum shop.

by rachel_sun

There are 1000 rum shops in Barbados.Rum is made by distilling the juice extracted from molasses, the thick liquid residue left after most of the sugar has been taken out of the sugarcane juice.Dark rums are made in traditional pot stills. The longer they are aged, the better.5 year old rum is good,10 year old rum is wonderful. The rum gets its dark colour from the wood.Lighter rums are made in modern stills for less time.

In 1640's rum was called 'kill devil'

by rachel_sun

In 1640's rum was called 'kill devil'.The rum then did not taste very nice, but it was very strong indeed. It was a hot, hellish and terrible liquor described by people then, hence its name.Tavernas opened up all over Barbados and they later turned into rum shops.Rum is very popular today. It is drunk at weddings, funerals, births, wakes and Christenings.Rum is usually drank straight from the bottle or added to a chaser. The local rum shop is also the local grocery store, fuel shop and a place for people to gossip.Women do not go,just men.

Try the local foods

by rachel_sun

The national dish that you must try is Flying Fish. Also,Dolphin fish (dont worry its not a flipper dolphin that we love),red snapper, hot salt fish cakes(i loved these)and pickled bread fruit cake. Most food is accompanied with rice, macaroni pie, plantain or ground yam.A local speciality that you must try is Roti,a savoury pocket of chicken ,beef and tomato.

St. John's Church

by pilgrim55

This is the interior of St. John's Church. This beautiful historic church is located on the east side of the island in St. John parish high on a hill. There are beautiful views of the Atlantic from here. It is quite near Hackleton's Cliff where Hackleton drove his rig off the cliff. This is also called suicide cliff. Someone not too long ago tried to ride a kit off the cliff and the winds blew him out into the Atlantic. He was never seen again.Despite all this tragedy nearby, St. John's Church is a very beautiful, peaceful place to come to visit.

Morgan Lewis Mill

by pilgrim55

The Morgan Lewis Mill is the only working sugar mill left on the island. There are many others dotted all over the landscape as one drives around the island, but this is the only one that still actually works. It is located in St. Andrew parish on the east side of the island.

Cherry Tree Hill

This is the beautiful view from Cherry Tree Hill in St. Andrew parish along the east coast of the island. You can see the wild Atlantic sweeping in along the coast and sugar cane growing along the road.

Oistens Chattel House

by pilgrim55

This is a chattel house in Oistens. They really are all over the island. Originally, they housed the slaves from Africa and the endentured servants from Ireland that were brought over to work in the sugar cane fields. The houses are so small that they could be picked up and hauled from field to field as the workers worked from one field to the next. People still live in these houses today, although they are free men.One of the Bajans that we talked to said that they did not resent being brought over as slaves anymore. They are free men now living a far better life than they feel they would have if they still lived in Africa.

The animal flower cave

by pilgrim55

This shot gives you idea of the size of the cave. The floor of the cave is very rocky and doesn't have a path, so you have to be careful how you walk across it.They have parties in the cave at night with music and rum and you can go swimming in one of the pools that is about 8 feet deep.

Animal Flower Cave

by pilgrim55

The animal flower cave is in the very north end of Barbados. It is a cave formed by the sea carving holes in the cliffs. The sea water remains in the cave in pools and animal flowers grow in the pools. There are windows that look out to the sea.

Bathsheba Surfers

by pilgrim55

You may not be able to see them, but there are a bunch of guys out there surfing in this picture. This is on the east coast of the island where there is big surf. Much of the area is not safe for swimming, but here in the Soup Bowl, you will find surfers.
