Gun Hill Lion

by joanj

On the road up to Gun Hill Signal Station, you pass this lion on the hillside. (The station is to the left and higher up the hill). The Lion is made of white limestone, and was sculpted in 1868 by Henry Wikinson, the Adjutant - General of the Imperial Forces stationed in Barbados, from one single piece of rock. Two inscriptions are carved in the rock at the lion's base. The first includes the name of the sculptor, his rank and the date he completed the project. Then there is the affirmation - "It (the British Lion) shall rule from the rivers to the sea, and from the sea to the ends of the earth"An inscription to the right of the sculpture (just visible) lists the four military workers who helped Wilkinson. Gun Hill Signal Station. in the parish of St. Geor

by joanj

This the walkway up to the Gun Hill Military Signal Station. It was erected in 1818 and was restored by the Barbados National Trust in 1982.The Road leading to this entrance, is called Fusilier Road, and was built by the Royal Scots Fusiliers, the Twenty First Regiment, during their stay at Gun Hill from September 1862 until February 1863. After climbing the steps up to the station itself, it affords wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. It now houses a collection of military memorabilia. There is also a small cafe. From January to May on Friday evenings nearest to the full moon, the Trust holds full moon cocktail parties on the terrace from 5.30pm. complete with sundown taps played by members of the Zouve Band of the Barbados Regiment. All visitors are welcome. The entrance fee is $30 for non members and $20 for members, including drinks and hors d'ouvres..Photo by joanj

Andromeda Botanic Gardens

by grandmaR

Andromeda Gardens is run by the Barbados National Trust. Andromeda was developed in 1954 by the late horticulturist Iris Bannochie for her weekend retreat. It soon became a memorable garden and she opened it to the public. She left the property to the National Trust in 1988. It is named for the Greek goddess Andromeda who was chained to a rock - probably because of the huge limestone boulders in this area. When we went it was part of the Heritage Pass ticket. However we had already used up our tickets, so we had to pay. Entry fee is now about $12BD for adults, $6BD for children; free for kids age 5 and underThe garden spreads over six acres and contains orchids, exotics and shrubs. It is one of the finest collections of plants in the region. Hours: 9am-5pm daily; no admittance after 4:30pm There is a Best of Barbados shop and also a small cafe at the garden entrance.

Helicopter tour

by agentjanet

My husband and I went on a champagne sunset tour with Horizon Helicopters and it was amazing... this is something a bit more expensive than some of the other tours but well worth it for the experience of a lifetime! Put it on your bucket list - you won't be sorry....

Take a Safari to See Barbados

by cmcard2

There are many types of vegetation from Palm Trees to Rain Forest. Abundant Sugar Cane Fields, and Mahogany Trees. Taking a safari is a way to view all of the gorgeuos views of Barbados and historical parishes such as St. John and its parish church erected in 1645.There is a foreign influence such as the Windmills brought by the Dutch from the Netherlands.

Rum Shop

The rum shops are a unique feature of Barbados. The owners live on the premises, and they are a front porch of the house where you walk in, order perhaps a Banks Beer, the most popular and only beer on the island.

Walk the Boardwalk

by joanj

Why not join the locals and other tourists walking the boardwalk either for just a stroll, or for exercise. There is no lighting after dark along the stretch but the hotels and bars along the way have lights so most of it will be ok to walk as long as you are not alone, I would not recommend that. There are policemen patrolling the boardwalk (I have only seen them during the day) on Skegways, see picture two

River Bay

by Gillybob

Located on the north coast of Barbados, River Bay is a popular picnic spot, with the area often crowded on weekends and holidays. It is a great spot with views leading down the northern coastline which is Barbados' wild side. Beach facilities include washrooms, changing rooms and showers and there are picnic benches set within the shade of the trees. At low tide, the area is popular for swimming but swimmers should stay close to the beach as there are strong currents further out.The bay is named after a small freshwater river which runs down to the sea.

Little Bay

by Gillybob

Located on the north-east coast of the island, Little Bay has some great scenery to offer including tidal pools and blowholes. You will also find a natural swimming pool which is safe for swimming in, as well as great cliffs to climb which offer beautiful views over Little Bay - be sure to wear sturdy shoes as the rocks can be quite sharp.

Cherry Tree Hill Reserve

by Gillybob

Located on the north-east of the island, it is believed that the name "Cherry Tree Hill" originated from the large number of cherry trees which once existed at this location. Now it is an area where the road is heavily canopied and lined with mahogany trees, which were introduced into Barbados in 1763.The area offers great views over the 'Scotland District' which covers the parish of St Andrew and named after the Patron Saint of Scotland.
