Gun Hill Lion
On the road up to Gun Hill Signal Station, you pass this lion on the hillside. (The station is to the left and higher up the hill). The Lion is made of white limestone, and was sculpted in 1868 by Henry Wikinson, the Adjutant - General of the Imperial Forces stationed in Barbados, from one single piece of rock. Two inscriptions are carved in the rock at the lion's base. The first includes the name of the sculptor, his rank and the date he completed the project. Then there is the affirmation - "It (the British Lion) shall rule from the rivers to the sea, and from the sea to the ends of the earth"An inscription to the right of the sculpture (just visible) lists the four military workers who helped Wilkinson.
