Dover

by Gillybob

Dover rests at the end of Barbados' party zone of St Lawrence Gap. The beach is one of the most popular on the island and is surrounded by hotels - be sure to watch out for the public access signs which indicate the route to the beach. Dover playing field is home of the Congaline Festival. Check out my Dover page for more information.

Bathsheba

by Gillybob

Bathsheba is on the east coast of Barbados. This coast has a wild aspect to it and feels totally different to the coast around the rest of the island. It makes a great place to spend a day during your visit to the island. Check out my Bathsheba page for more information, including how to get there using public transport.

Malibu Rum - Brighton Beach

by vabchtraveler

We hailed a cab from the pier and within 15 minutes were at the Malibu Rum Distillery - Brighton Beach location. The entry fee to the beach (which gets you a tour of the distillery, a lounge chair, a chit for a 'free' Malibu rum drink and access to the restrooms and changing facilities) was $35.00 -- a little steep, I thought, as I was unprepared for it based on reading other VT and TripAdvisor posts. But, let me assure you, we could not get in without paying the fee. Anyway, just be prepared... maybe your cab driver can work wonders for you and get you in free or cheap but it didn't happen for us. But, it was worth it. We didn't do the tour but the beach was beautiful, the water clear and clean, the setting charming, and the facilities clean. And, we had the added bonus of a restaurant and bar at our convenience -- not a bad deal, at all. I would definitely go back - BTW - do NOT forget...

Plantation Roots & Rhythms

by Himsan

Plantation Roots & Rhythms. Having been in Barbados for a few days, I did not really feel I was in the Caribbean, that is until I went to the Plantation. The Roots & Rhythms nights (Wednesdays and Fridays) are excellent, a real taste of Barbados. You get a history of the country from it's African roots, it's Jamaican influences, the lot. An excellent steel band plays before you dine. The food is superb, an all you can eat buffet. All local drinks are included in the price. The entertainment throughout is excellent, very well put together and well worth the money. The service is very good too and worth tipping. Definitely include this in your visit to Barbados.

short suggestions for a day in Barbados

by Sunniebgi

Much depends on what you really want to do. If it's only a beach, I'd suggest Accra/Rockley beach on the South coast. Nice location, places to eat, nice beach etc. if you want to explore the island or see what there is to see, you can either rent a car or, yes I'm saying it, take one of the tours from the ship, one that would give you a broad overview of the island. If you don't want either of those, you can always walk into Bridgetown, explore the historical buildings and get an idea what a day in Bridgetown is like.Good luck.

Arts Events in May

by corriescott

I create an arts happenings every month so that locals and visitors can go to openings and events. It is a free service as I got so frustrated that we would hear about things in the newspapers after the event. This is a great way for visitors to intermingle with local artists.I put it in my website as a blog and renew it every month

Sandy Lane Beach

by Emile72

We visited Barbados on a cruise tour. From the harbour, we went to Sandy Lane Beach. We paid 10USD pp one way, which is quite steep considering the distance. It is about 15 min. to drive from the harbour to Sandy Lane beach. You can take a buss, it is about 1USD max pp. But since we were on a cruise, we tried to get most of our time and cab was the fastest option. The cab drops you on the street, where you walk through the buildings to the beach. Make sure when on the beach, don't take the first lounge chairs, but walk a bit to the left. Everyone is laying at the same part of the beach. We walked 100meters to the left and there was a man renting lounge chairs, 5USD pp and we were his only customers and had the beach there for ourselves. A wonderful beach, the sand, the water, just picture perfect beautiful. Toilets in the nearby hotel or at the little bar (where all the people lay)....

St. John's Parish Church

by grandmaR

St.John's Parish Church is a classic Gothic church situated on a cliff overlooking coastal St. John Parish and the Atlantic Ocean. The current Church was built in 1836 to replace the previous church which had been destroyed by a hurricane in 1831. The first church on this location was built in 1660, but was destroyed by fire. The church is often included on tours and has a visitor's center. We had stopped at St. John's church for a minute on the previous visit to use the bathroom at the visitor's center, but on the ship's tour, we had more time. We were told that the oldest burial there was Ferdinando Paleologus who was a descendant of the brother of the great Emperor Constantine XI, the last of the Byzantine Imperial family. Paleogogus fled to Barbados after the Battle of Naseby and the death of his father Theodoro in 1636. (His father's monument is near the Llandulph Church in...

Listen to the Band

by joanj

UPDATE - March 2009 - The new boardwalk now runs just a few feet in front of the bandstand, and unfortunately there is not much seating area now, and the childrens playground is no longer in use. The bandstand itself is rundown and in need of repair, so no concerts on a Sunday afternoon now. I have still left this tip on my pages, in case the bandstand is renewed and operable again. On some Sunday afternoons during the season, the Royal Barbados Police Force Band play for a few hours at a few Bandstands. This particular one is along the Hastings coast road, and to the right of where I am standing to take the photograph,is the ocean. The music usually begins around 4pm. and lasts until sunset. On some occasions you are afforded a beautiful view of the setting sun.Be sure to take some liquid to prevent dehydration in the afternoon heat, although sometimes there are refreshments available.
