Barbados Museum

by grandmaR

The first thing we did after we got the car was go to the Barbados Museum. We had a hard time finding it, and also a hard time figuring out which was the correct door to go in.The Barbados Museum is housed in an original 19th century British Military prison at St. Ann's Garrison. There is a small place to eat there. The first area is about the ecology of the coral reefs and mangrove swamps. Then there is an exhibition on the early inhabitants of Barbados is housed in the permanent exhibition "In Search of Bim." The Challenor Gallery has a wide variety of military objects and artefacts. The exhibit in the former prison areas include uniforms, medals, photography and other memorabilia from the early 17th century to World War II. There are also guns etc in the courtyardThe best exhibit is called "Yesterdays Children" and shows how children would have dressed, their chores and other family...

Concorde Experience

by joanj

One of the British Airways Concorde aircraft has now been located in a special hanger at Grantly Adams International Airport, Barbados, where you can experience a simulator., watch a video presentation, and see this wonderful piece of engineering.(Concorde used to be housed at Fairford Air Base, 4 miles from where we lived in Wiltshire, and it used to be put though it's paces for a long while before being used commercially. My children used to be outside in their prams, and even when it screemed overhead we were so used to it, it never bothered them at all. It did shatter one of my bathroom windows, and used to rattle the garage door, but we loved watching it. )When it used to come into Barbados on a Saturday, nearly everyone on the west and south coast used to flock to the shoreline to see it, especially the Canadians and Americans. (The English among us were used to seeing or hearing...

Visit Bathsheba

by golfpro518

Bathsheba is located on the less developed east coast of the Island. The Soup Bowl is one of the most popular surfing locations. Rugged cliffs run down to beautiful, unspoiled beaches. It is a must-see location on Barbados and can be reached by public bus or private taxi.

Sunbury Plantation House

by Hewer

This is a really impressive place. The grounds are well-maintained and there are many historical pieces on display. They have a couple of restaurants, a bar and a museum. If you want to have lunch or dinner there, it would be a good idea to call ahead. They do a special candlelit dinner on Thursday nights. It really is a lovely old house and there is a great deal of history here. It was originally built in 1660 and was long one of the leading centres of sugar production in Barbados. Many of the leaders involved in the 1816 slave revolt were based here. Sunbury has survived hurricanes, fires (and my wedding guests) and is regarded as one of the most important buildings in Barbados.

Barbados' Beaches

by bsfreeloader

At first glance, Barbados’ beaches fit the textbook definition of an island paradise: sugary-white sand perpetually lapped by refreshing turquoise waters. Upon closer inspection, however, the beaches fall considerably short of ideal. First, nearly every beach is cut-off by a rock wall, making long leisurely strolls all but impossible. Second, most beaches are backed by a seemingly endless line of high-rise hotels. Third, the beaches tend be crowded, making for good people watching but not much else. Finally, nearly every beach I visited had a problem with fish guts and fish heads washing up on shore (the locals seemed to be indifferent to slicing and dicing the catch of the day amongst the tourists at even the most popular of beaches). But this is nitpicking – the beaches are not the Caribbean’s best, but they are pretty damn nice.

Barbados' East Coast

by bsfreeloader

Rarely visited and well off the tourist track, Barbados’ east coast makes for a nice diversion from the crowded beaches of the west and south coasts. The shoreline is rugged and the surf strong, but this side of the island offers some of Barbados’ best scenery. From the rocky beaches of Bathsheba (Barbados’ prime surf town) to the blowholes to the north, it’s any easy and pleasant drive along the coast.

Monkey Spotting

by bsfreeloader

As on a few of the other Caribbean islands, Green Vervet Monkeys were introduced on Barbados by early settlers. As on the other islands, interactions between the monkeys and humans are problematic. Found throughout the island where there is suitable bush, the monkeys damage crops and menace farmers. One monkey was even suspected of causing an eight-hour, island-wide blackout on Halloween of 2006, when it allegedly tripped a powerline. But, for visitors, the monkeys are fun to watch. If you want to see them, try the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary late in the afternoon.

Birding

by bsfreeloader

Unlike most of the other islands in the Lesser Antilles, Barbados is entirely void of endemic species. Moreover, just three of the Caribbean endemics occur: Lesser Antillean Bullfinch, Green-throated Carib, and Antillean Crested Hummingbird. Nevertheless, the island is popular with birders, primarily because it is renowned for the regular arrival of trans-Atlantic vagrants. Probably the best overall place to search for such vagrants and get a taste of Barbadian birding is the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary. Present on the day I visited were Anhinga, Little Egret, and Glossy Ibis, among other species.
