Sunbury Plantation

by grandmaR

When we were here by cruise ship the second time in 2006, we took some tours one of which finished up in Sunbury Plantation House. Sunbury allowed photographs everywhere which was really nice. There were separate guides for this site.Sunbury was originally built in 1660 by Matthew Chapman, an Irish/English planter, one of the first settlers on the island. and was one of the leading centers of sugar production in Barbados for a long time. It was also one of the main loci of the 1816 slave revolt. The house was bought by someone who wasn't living there - they had a house down the road. It was carefully restored for tourists and includes antiques, china, silver, and furniture. Sunbury House was opened to the public in January, 1984After we toured the main house (upstairs and down) we went into a courtyard where they offered us free punch (with or without). There was also a display of...

Breaking the chains

by CliffClaven

The Emancipation Statue shows a slave breaking his chains. The slaves had been brought to Barbados from West Africa to work on the sugar plantations from the middle of the 17th century. Slavery was finally abolished on the island in 1838, when the 70000 descendants of the African slaves brought to the island took to the streets in celebration.

St James Church

by mazzap

St.James Parish Church is among the four oldest surviving churches in Barbados and is located near the site of the island's first settlement in Holetown. In the southern porch of the church is a bell with the inscription - "God bless King William, 1696". This bell pre-dates the famous American Liberty bell by 54 years.A member of the congregation greeted us as we arrived and gave us a short, interesting guided tour around this lovely church. Donations to the church can be given at the end of the tour.

Francia Great House

by BruceDunning

The Francia family were a great influence on the island for many years. They helped structure the laws and also started agricultural commerce and trade. One time they had a huge plantation of banana trees. The family lived on these grounds for 150 years and had workers/slaves to help with crop gathering and daily chores.

Orchid World

by grandmaR

We were on a tour called "The Best of Barbados", and the first stop was the Orchid World Farm. We walked through the gardens before we got to the orchid houses and the guide showed us on a ginger flower how to take the leaves sprouting from the flower and grow a new plant from it (photo 3). We also saw a lot of orchids of course and Bob took some neat closeup photos- most of these are his. I didn't need to use any of the benches in the garden, even though the paths were a little uneven. Our tour in the location lasted about 45 minutes The farm (a former chicken and pig farm) is at an altitude of 810 ft. There is a wedding gazebo is located on the best vantage point. A Best of Barbados Gift Shop and Bar & Restaurant are also located on-site.Orchid World is open 7 days a week, from 9 am - 5 pm.AdmissionUS$7.00 VAT inclusive per personChildren half price

It's a must, you can't visit such a nice island without a dip and you are spoilt for choices of beaches. Most of the beaches are highly recommended for swimming and water sports.East coast beaches - There are very strong and rough under currents. There are warning signs to this affect!

Mount Gay Rum Tour

by narffran

The one phrase I would use to describe this experience would be "feeling nice". This Mount Gay Rum tour takes you first back in time to how Mount Gay Rum originated. You then experience sthe process the in spector takes to test the molasses, and the alcohol. In this pic my friend was smelling straight up 80 proof alcohol. At the end of the tour you can engage tasting of the diffe5rent rums and brandys. If you choose to pay extrat you can also stay for lunch and a show. This show features a tuk band, men on stilts and a woman with a big behind that dances. She actually brings you up on stage and I know this because this is what happens to me.
