Driving in Barbados

by lionreb

For our recent vacation in Barbados we rented a car. I would say that this experience was a success, but I have much to say about it. We are used to left hand drive cars. They are not so different from the right hand drive cars except that everything is reversed and if you have never done it before I would recommend having your partner or a navigator in the car with you to remind you of where you are and where you should be going. The maps of the roads are not clear and the roundabouts are confusing to say the least. Renting a car gives you mobility and is worth the expense especially if you don't have much time to wait for buses and learn the ropes. Just wear your seat belts and be alert. The roads do not have much in the way of shoulders and the main roads sometimes have drainage ditches 4-6 feet deep right by the side of the road and no rental company will cover you for tires and...

August Flights

by Sunniebgi

Early early August is the end of our CropOver Festival with Kadooment Day (like Carnival) happening on the first Monday in August. Flights just before that are not cheap. later in August you might find better fares, except that 2 things happend. Students/families who have been in England all summer will be returning as schools beginning in early September. and Students who are going to England to study will be leaving in late august (I believe) to return to england. So pick your dates carefully.Good luck.

Take the Bus

by grandmaR

There are several kinds of buses all quite reasonable in price. All routes are marked by bus stops which say "TO CITY" for buses that are going to Bridgetown or "Out Of City" for buses going the other direction. The problem is that Bridgetown is the hub of all the routes. So if you want to go from say Bathsheba to Folkestone, you have to go to Bridgetown and transfer, and this may take some considerable time.Or if you want to use buses, you could stay closer to the center of the action instead of way out in Bathsheba like we did.Note Since they drive on the left, you will get the bus on the opposite side of the road that you would think.

Rent a Car

by grandmaR

We arrived in Barbados late and took a taxi to the hotel. This was just as well because out on the east coast it's really dark at night and we'd never have found our way there by ourselves. The rental car folks delivered the car to us at the hotel the next morning. They had all the paperwork, including the documents necessary for us to get a Bajan driver's license which is necessary to have to drive in Barbados ($10 extra). We dropped the car off at the airport before the office was open in the morning when we left.We had a wonderful time driving all over the island even though they drive on the left, and at first Bob tried to shift using the window winder.Since November was the rainy season, we didn't rent an open topped car, but the one the next level up. If you have a surfboard you can only rent a jeep or a moke. The arrangements for the rental were made through the Edgewater Inn. We...

Public Transport

by joanj

The blue/yellow transport board buses run frequently, and there is one charge for any route. You can go for miles and miles for just the one fare, and see a lot of the island. Fares are Bds$1.50. You must have the correct change. There are two bus stations in Bridgetown, one to go from Bridgetown west and north , and the other from Bridgetown south and up the east coast. Where we stay along the south coast, we get the Oistens bus which goes direct to Speightstown, on the North/West coast for one single fare. It takes about an hour, but you do get to see parts of Barbados, and the communities therein, that you would otherwise not encounter. This bus route does not go into Bridgetown bus station, but goes around the back of the Garrison Savannah and services districts around to Black rock where it joins the road up the west coast. This bus route goes through Holetown.Bus rides should be...

Public Bus System

by golfpro518

Highly recommend using the local bus system to get around Barbados. Schedules are available online. One way fare is $1.50 (Barbados). That's only $.75, US! Buses go everywhere on the island but be prepared for the buses to be fully loaded. School children use the same system so buses are especially crowded around 4:00pm. Two main terminals in Bridgetown, Cheapside Terminal and Fairchild Terminal, serve as home base and most routes require a return trip to get to a new destination. Travel to the north end or across the island takes about 45 minutes. Staff and passengers are very friendly and courteous. Gentleman are encouraged to give up their seats when crowded. The roads are very narrow and the rides can be quite exciting, but the system has an excellent safety record.Government buses are blue while private buses are yellow. In addition, there are private taxis (both vans and sedans)...

Taxis

by TRimer

After reading and researching on this forum and in the guide books we opted to just take taxis each night to the restaurants from our hotel rather than rent a car. We realized that we would be limited in what we saw- but we were in the country for such a short time and needed to relax more.Taxis were easy to get. They were either at the hotel in front or the restaurant called them for us when we got the bill. The funny thing is that we took so many cabs from the Hilton to St. Lawrence Gap and each time it was about $20 BBD. We would laugh and say $20 - and they would sometimes say $25 which was weird because we would be going exactly the same distance. But since they had no meters - who was to argue.

Buses

by fatehpur

It's easy to get around the island on the bus, just remember that the far is $1.50 no matter how far you travel. Remember to have the correct far as you will not get any change. This does not include tour buses, check the price before booking.

mini mokes- buses or taxi

by mrscarolinesanyang

Because the island is small it is easy to cover it during your stay. there are frequent busses, that run to all the tourist spots/ attractions. if you would prefer, you can hire a taxi, you can negotiate a good price if you ask for a return trip. if you venture to an out of the way adventure, the taxi will wait for you, even if you slan to stay for many hours.if you prefer total treedon, you can hire a car, there is plenty to choose from, just ensure you request air conditioning. For the more adventurous- you can hire a mini moke. this is more of a buggy than a car, but very reasonable, and you dont need to remember the air conditioning- thats automatic- the faster you drive- the higher the conditioning. ENJOY!

Flying into Barbados

by mwenn2100

We flew into Barbados on American Airlines from San Juan. The plane was a smaller plane and upon arrival the passengers were bused a very short distance to the terminal. The airport is under construction at the moment so the inside is very sparse, but the design of the exterior was very welcoming. The ticket counters were all open air and gave a real Caribbean feel to all of the visitors.
