I flew from London, UK. I travelled with Airtours and I would definately recommend them if your aim is to keep the family happy. There is a TV screen on the back of each seat with various movies, programmes, radio stations and even a camera that you can watch your own take-off from! There are 2 main bus companies in Barbados. The official buses are blue. There are also many smaller yellow buses on the roads which can be far more entertaining. They often have soca/ragga music blaring from the sound systems as they tear along the bumpy roads. They are often more efficient than the blue buses and far more regular.

We got a Caledonian flight from London Gatwick with one stop in Antigua for dropping off.You can hire a jeep at the airport for the whole time if you want and it will cost about 300 pounds. We chose not to hire until the second week 1) because we got the advice of others that had done some of the sites already and 2) because it's very hot during the day and we were seeing a lot of sunburned people coming back in the evening. We hired a moke from Stoutes Car Rental for three days (52 US Dollars per day +15% tax) and that was OK for us. No need to take a map, just follow signs on the bus stops (they either say TO Bridgetown or FROM Bridgetown. For the record we took the car to Bathsheba, Bottom Bay, Bridgetown and a general run around the north of the Island. You need a barbados licence to drive on the island but, for an extra few dollars this is arranged when the car is dropped off. There...

I had started my trip in Grenada so took a LIAT flight. There are direct flights from London. The bus system is great and inexpensive. You can take a taxi but I'd advise instead to have the bus adventure and hire a car or jeep so you can do a proper tour of the island.

GET ON THE BUS ...

GET ON THE BUS the island bus service is second to none. the national bus service uses Mercades buses and have a route and schedules. the local yellow buses run the same route but are a bit more relaxed and this is were you can make friend. the alsos have route taxis that make shorter trips into other areas. GET ON THE BUS MON! BUS BUS BUS or the taxi if you realy have to be there ie. the airport.

We flew Virgin Atlantic from London Gatwick. Although we had engine trouble on the way out and had to return to Gatwick for a few hours, the service was very good. Food on the return journey (and turbulence) left a bit to be desired.Rent a jeep! We took a Suzuki soft top jeep for about $300 US per week. It was the BEST and most fun way of seeing the island at your leisure

We travel by the Dawn Princess Cruise Ship.We took a tour offered through Princess Cruises. We travel by tour bus and it lasted for about 4 hours. However, if you are spending more then a day in Barbados, I would think renting a car would be the way to go.

Air -- we must use American Airlines from the east coast of USAA car is definitely needed to see all areas of the island at your pace. We usually rent from Stoutes. They have a site at www.stoutescars.com

Jeep Hire

by Fen

Hire your own car as this is the best way to explore and get around the island.

Old time Bus

by stiab3

This is a vintage, old-style Barbados bus. Banks, the local brewery uses it to pick people up from their hotels to take them on tours of the brewery.
