American Airlines to Belize City

I'll always fly American Airlines, that's unless I don't have another choice. Flying to Belize from NYC was quite easy with American Airlines. They have many flights daily with connections in either Dallas or Miami. We flew from Newark making our connection in Dallas on the outbound, and on our return flight home we connected via Miami.

The flight attendants on each of our flights were funny, easy going and complying with any request (the person on the aisle seat sitting next to Miriam made an unusal request, but the flight attendant was most obliging).

During your flight, the flight attendants will hand you the obligatory customs forms, so make sure to fill them out prior arriving at the airport.

Be advised, that although this is considered an international flight there is no food service on these flights other than beverages (unless you fly in Business or First), but they do have food for sale, or alternatively you can purchase food prior to boarding.

Air Transport Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker

If your goal is to get to Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker just as fast as you can, instead of taking a water taxi/ferry, try Maya Island Air* or Tropic Air* which should put you on the island in about 15 minutes whether living from Goldson International Airport or Belize City Municipal Airport.

For those in no rush, and who like being on the water, water taxis are moderately inexpensive, running around $10 for adults; children 5 - 10 are half price. If you couldn't live without bringing your furry companions, large or caged pets are $2.50. Tickets can be purchased at the Maritime Museum located at the foot of the Belize Swing Bridge in Belize City where the water taxis leave from.

You'll most likely begin your trip to Belize by flying into Belize City (actually its suburb, called Ladyville), unless you're a cruise ship passenger. This airport appeared a little more organized this time around than it did on our first trip here in 1996, when it was a total cattle call at the Tropic Air ticket counter - no lines or anything, just a crowd of people pressing up to the counter.

Be aware that there's an exit tax that must be paid in cash when you leave the country - some airline tickets include this tax in the ticket price, some don't. It was $35US. When you arrive, it's about a half hour taxi ride into the city, for a set rate of $20US. Or, if you're not staying in Belize City, you can transfer to one of the local airlines, Tropic Air or Maya Air, to continue on to the cayes or elsewhere within the country.

There's a little ice cream counter across from the ticket counters that sells ice cream mixed with several different fresh fruits. Or if you prefer refreshments of another kind, there's a bar once you pass through the metal detector.

There are many boats you can rent in Belize. You can either rent them alone or you can share with other passengers for your choice of destination.

The boats can take you to Caulker, San Pedro, Chetumal, Mexico.

You can see them at the seaport terminal, close to the Terminal Mall. Make sure to haggle the price and ask around. Don't just take what they tell you.

Tube riding is excellent but you are required to arrange a guide to go with you.

there are tons of tubes to rent at the entrance of the Caves Branch. 8 km from the main road . the main western highway that goes from Belize to san ignacio.

price of tube riding around $45 usd

If you get a tour to pick you up from your hotel in belize or from san ignacio is around $65

Bus from Chetumal
Jase1177 profile photo

If you are going into Belize via Mexico, you will likely take a bus from Chetumal. At the bus station in Chetumal, you can take Premier Line. This appeared to be the only bus offering this service, although I believe there may be others that were not apparent or departing from this station. The ticket booth, as well as one of its reps, is located near the main entrance of the station. You will likely hear him ask you if you are going to Belize or Belize City, especially if you appear to be a backpacker or looking around. The bus was pretty comfortable. It was similar to Greyhound buses used in the US during the 1990s, so you should not feel worried about comfort level. There are several buses during the day, as it takes less than 3.5 hours to get to Belize City, with brief stops at Corozal and Orange Walk. They stop in the main Novelo's bus station away from the downtown water taxi station.

Cost: $9 US
Travel Time: <3.5 hours

Border Crossing from Mexico and Belize were relatively easy. It took less than 10min and $10 US to exit Mexico and then less than 15min to go through the Belize Immigration and Customs for our entire bus.
