  • Tip Rating:
  • You'll most likely begin your trip to Belize by flying into Belize City (actually its suburb, called Ladyville), unless you're a cruise ship passenger. This airport appeared a little more organized this time around than it did on our first trip here in 1996, when it was a total cattle call at the Tropic Air ticket counter - no lines or anything, just a crowd of people pressing up to the counter.

Be aware that there's an exit tax that must be paid in cash when you leave the country - some airline tickets include this tax in the ticket price, some don't. It was $35US. When you arrive, it's about a half hour taxi ride into the city, for a set rate of $20US. Or, if you're not staying in Belize City, you can transfer to one of the local airlines, Tropic Air or Maya Air, to continue on to the cayes or elsewhere within the country.

There's a little ice cream counter across from the ticket counters that sells ice cream mixed with several different fresh fruits. Or if you prefer refreshments of another kind, there's a bar once you pass through the metal detector.

Airplane: Air Transport Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker
  • Tip Rating:
  • If your goal is to get to Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker just as fast as you can, instead of taking a water taxi/ferry, try Maya Island Air* or Tropic Air* which should put you on the island in about 15 minutes whether living from Goldson International Airport or Belize City Municipal Airport.

For those in no rush, and who like being on the water, water taxis are moderately inexpensive, running around $10 for adults; children 5 - 10 are half price. If you couldn't live without bringing your furry companions, large or caged pets are $2.50. Tickets can be purchased at the Maritime Museum located at the foot of the Belize Swing Bridge in Belize City where the water taxis leave from.

Airplane: American Airlines to Belize City
I'll always fly American Airlines, that's unless I don't have another choice. Flying to Belize from NYC was quite easy with American Airlines. They have many flights daily with connections in either Dallas or Miami. We flew from Newark making our connection in Dallas on the outbound, and on our return flight home we connected via Miami.

The flight attendants on each of our flights were funny, easy going and complying with any request (the person on the aisle seat sitting next to Miriam made an unusal request, but the flight attendant was most obliging).

During your flight, the flight attendants will hand you the obligatory customs forms, so make sure to fill them out prior arriving at the airport.

Be advised, that although this is considered an international flight there is no food service on these flights other than beverages (unless you fly in Business or First), but they do have food for sale, or alternatively you can purchase food prior to boarding.

Boat / Ferry: Water Taxi to/from the Cayes

If you're arriving from Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker, you can either fly into Belize City or take the water taxi. The water taxi is cheaper and more colorful, in that you're much more likely to be sharing your ride with locals as well as other travelers. It's run by the Caye Caulker Water Taxi Association and is located right next to the swing bridge, on the north side. Fares are $20BZ one way, $35BZ round-trip. Don't worry, if one boat fills up, they'll take another one too, so everyone gets on. Their website below has their time schedules.

Restroom tip - if you want to use the restroom in the water taxi terminal, have 50 cents ready for the woman at the restroom entrance. She has the toilet paper!

When we first arrived in Belize, a last-minute change in our airline connections forced us to take a small airplane internal flight directly from the International Airport (several miles outside the city) to pre-booked accommodations on Caye Caulker. As a result, our first experience with Belize City was six days later when we arrived back from the northern Cayes via a Water Taxi. This is a fun way to travel, and the distances are not so great that it takes a large amount of time - US$10 for the 45 minute trip to Caye Caulker. The boats hold quite a few people (~20-30) and move along quite nicely with their typical 3 x 200 HP outboard engines. They run between 8 AM and 4 PM, departing roughly every hour. This photo shows a typical white boat, with a cabin for shelter if it happens to be raining, tied up in front of the Water Taxi Terminal on Haulover Creek. The second photo shows the numerous anchored boats in the creek as our water taxi was pulling in from the islands. We were in the city for only a few minutes, as we quickly grabbed a mini-van taxi at the chaotic water taxi terminal and headed for the International Airport for our pre-arranged rental vehicle pickup.

Car/Truck: Lots of Shuttles and Taxis

  • Our private Trek Stop shuttle from San Ignacio - Belize City
    Our private Trek Stop shuttle

Almost 2 weeks later, at the end of our trip, we returned to Belize City for one night. This photo shows the mini-van shuttle that brought us from San Ignacio, 72 miles away on the Guatemala border. We had spent a week there, based at a great lodgings called the Trek Stop, and they had a planned run into the city for an airport pickup, allowing us to tag along for US$15 each. This was a great deal because we had planned to take the Express bus, which would have been much slower and would have cost US$6 each. The shuttle dropped us off directly at our Seaside Guesthouse accommodations.

Mini-vans similar to this are quite often used as taxis in the city, and we used them twice for in-city rides and twice more to get to the International Airport in Ladyville. We had a great driver for our final ride to the airport (the standard US$25 rate for the two of us) - the same guy who had picked us up in town the day before. He had given us his card to call him for our drive to the airport and waived the $3 charge for our in-town ride. Give him a try if you get the chance (see below).

Most people who arrive in Belize by air land at the Belize International Airport in Ladyville which is only 10 miles outside of Belize City. If you want to take a taxi into Belize City from the airport, expect to pay around $20 USD.

If you take the rental car option, car rental offices are just outside the airport terminal and you will find other locations around town as well.

For those whose final destinations are Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker, or if you are interested in visiting these tourist spots for the day, daily excursions by water taxi will get you there and leave from the Swing Bridge at Haulover Creek. Departure times are between 8am and 5:30pm. Round trip fare to Caye Caulker is currently $15 US and to Ambergris Caye is $22.50 US roundtrip. You'll find the Swing Bridge at the foot of Queen Street/Albert Street on Haulover Creek.

Boat / Ferry: Norweigan Cruise Line's Sea
  • Tip Rating:
  • Belize City is quickly becoming a popular spot for people to visit on Western Caribbean Cruises. During our Dec. 2004 cruise, we stopped in for a whole day, which was perfect for many different excursion possibilities. Although we chose cave tubing, others visited the zoo, Mayan ruins, or took a fan boat out into the water to see wildlife and foilage.
