Restaurant Calypso is very nicely located. it is adjacent to the marina, so one has something to look at and enjoy breeze. The Calypso’s cook is quite a qualified chef. Fish is always fresh and tasty. On the other hand, the wait personnel, by and large young girls, leaves a lot to be desired. They are not discourteous; they are just plain apathetic; they move slowly, overall, simply not motivated to please. After a number of visits there, it was quite obvious to us that the girls rather prefer hanging out in a group near loud speakers in one corner of the restaurant, and sing along all whiny songs blazing from the speakers. First, it was kind of cute in an eccentric island way … entertaining. Soon the loud noise as well as their flocking in one corner gets old. After we had been shouting for a while, I asked a waitress to turn the volume down. She looked at me in disbelief like if I asked her to strip. What happened next was even humorous; she started dancing alone with the music and slowly walked away. It was nonsensically brainless and yet quite comical. I let it go, knowing that I was leaving for the States that afternoon. Yet Calypso was the ONLY place in Belize I enjoyed to be at night because there is nothing else around and it is not safe to be away from the hotel.

About Belize - it will do for one trip. If it were cheap for what it has to offer, but it is not.... Tickets from the any place (Dallas, Houston, Miami) are over 1K. Hotels in Belize and islands are over $100 /night while rooms and facilities are far from being top notch; Very shabby and worn out... More importantly, Caribbean waters near Belize shore are too shallow for swimming; and there are no beaches per se neither near Belize city nor near islads. There are only narrow and short sand strips on the islands. Services are mediocre. There is a country exit fee (what a heck is that?!); it is $32 US dollars per person’; we also were charged some kind of tax of 10% on food and services. Trinkets and souvenirs are not so great. Positive impression: the Belizeans are easy going, nice and smily people. Lack of technology ( No cell phones, no internet) can be stressful, but can be very liberating.
