Belize Diving
  • Tip Rating:
  • Belize Diving is the name of one of Caye Caulker's best dive shops. Established in 1978, Belize Diving Services is one of the longest operating dive shops in Belize. The shop is owned and staffed by Master Instructor Kathy Dalton and Master Scuba Diver Trainer Dawn Williams. I did two dives with Kathy and Dawn. At that time they had an old WWII boat, but it worked. According to their website, they now have a new boat.

I had my dive computer, mask, and snorkel, and rented everything else. They supplied oranges and water, and we anchored for lunch (Bob brought me a sandwich while I checked in)

One of the main activities for visitors to the cays is scuba, but there's a lot of snorkeling too. Because Belize has such an extensive reef system, that also means that the beaches are narrow. The reefs keep the surf from grinding up rocks into sand and building wide beaches. So snorkeling is most often done from small boats.

You can rent all your equipment, but it is best to bring your own mask and snorkel so that you can be sure it fits. You should also take sun protection and water. Driftwood will fill your container for a small charge (almost everyone drinks bottled water). In addition check and be sure if you will have lunch provided - if not, bring lunch. Driftwood employs several women as facilitators - to sell and book dive trips. They work on commission and are extremely helpful. Driftwood does its own snorkel trips and contracts out the diving.

I can't find Driftwood on the Caye Caulker website anymore, so I've listed the Star Tours website under the address.

    Kayaking Caye Caulker
  • Tip Rating:
  • My son and I rented a double kayak from the Seaside Cabanas to venture out into the beautiful blue ocean of the Caye. Much of the underwater life consists of seagrass which is abundant in and around the island. We saw a baby sting ray glide throughout the grass. Lots of colorful fish darting around us and among the corals. Beautifully colorful!!

rented a kayak from the seaside cabanas for $20.00BZ dollars an hour. Unfortunately, the Seaside Cabanas has since had a fire just a few weeks after my son and I left the island and is no longer in operation. There are many other guesthouses that do rent kayaks for just about the same price.

I didn't participate, but watched some kite surfers and wind surfers. They seemed to be having a lot of fun. If you don't want to do it, you can spend time watching them show off.

Basketball: Play basketball with the locals
I played some basketball on the crappy court with the bent rims. It was great. I played in my Tevas, but most of the locals played barefoot. They play hard and have smiles on their faces as they do it. None of the attitude that American players have.

    Swimming with the Rays
Belize is known for its beautiful azure waters ... snorkeling and scuba diving abound. There are two sites around Caye Caulker that are a lot of fun to visit, with something a bit unique. You have the opportunity to swim and snorkel with Southern Stingrays, a rare treat.

The first place to visit these creatures is in the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve, a place known as Shark and Ray Alley. Many half-day snorkel trips stop here, and when we were there it was possible to swim in the shallow water (not much swimming needed, it was only about 4-5 feet deep). The rays were there by the dozen-full, it was sublime. They were like cats, playful and shy ... when you try to touch them, they skitter away, but if you leave them be they swim around and between you legs, sometimes swimming up a leg to your torso. If you hold a fish in the water for them to see, they will literally clamber all over you in order to get at it! they do not sting when swimming, so there was no danger. It was such a great experience.

There is a second spot, known by the same knickname, is found in Hol Chan reserve. There, there were not as many rays, but a few know the boats and did follow us and swim playfully along. It was fun.

For snorkeling, a good snorkel mask, fins, and lots of sunscreen!

For scuba diving, the usual tanks, regulartors, and equipment is good to have.

Most of the tour companies provide equipment, either snorkel or scuba, for those taking tours.

    Basketball: Lone Basketball court
pickup games can be had at varying times of the day on Caye Caulker. We saw games going on in the morning and afternoon in the sweltering heat and games in the evening which they had the outdoor lights on for the players. There are benches for spectators, no shade so bring water bottles!! Just on the other side of the court is the ocean so anyone can go for a quick dip!

    basketball!
