Vaca Falls in Black Rock Canyon

There are some nice trails leading from the lodge. We did the summit hike and then wandered up the river about a mile? to the falls .Very low water while we were there so we could walk all over the falls themselves and we swam in some of the large pools. There's a picture of one of the larger pools below the falls area. There are some boulders in this part of the river- like the ones near the lodge but smaller.

Pet the Bat

Near Black Rock Lodge is a small cave system where mayan artifacts can be found as bats flap past your ears. The Maya brought pots here as offerings to the gods but left no pot intact for fear that they would become comfy resting spots for evil spirits, or so our guide told us. Anyway the broken potters sat in piles on the cave floor looking like it was left there just last week. Smoke stains and paint were sill visible on many.

The natural wonders of the limestone caves, stlagtites and mites, glitering crystal formations, really beautiful. The ceilings are covered with tarantulas, and tons of bats. The bats seemed unconcerned with our presence even letting us reach up and pet them.

On the Spot

Just upstream from Black Rock the Macal falls through a series of rapids known as the Vaca Falls. While the river only falls 15-20 feet the force and the volume of water is impressive.

Also the rocks underfoot show a swirl of colors and interesting curves shaped by the river. In the middle of the falls, as far as you can climb out there is a perfect spot for a photograph, it is writen in the rocks. If you go remember X marks the spot!
