Hodie's: Ask for the escabeche

What a great atmosphere in the evening. Sit on the patio and enjoy the large lawn and invading orange grove. There is a playground for the kids and the local cuisine is excellent. Try the chicken, rice and beans with a starter of their flavorable chicken escabeche. Have a local beer - Biliken or Lighthouse to finish off the day's heat.

The TV was a little loud, but it was tuned to the annual state of the union address from the Belizean parliment, so we figured it was meant to be loud.

Favorite Dish: While it is the Monday night special, ask for the escabeche if you don't see it on the menu. I'm thinking this is a Belizean grandma's sick bed chicken soup. Browned chicken in a clear broth flavored with onion and allspice. To die for.

Hodie's: Relaxed outdoor dining w/a huge menu

Chicken fajitas were a hit with our group.

Hode's Place is a huge covered outdoor restaurant just outside downtown San Ignacio. Especially good for larger groups - you are seated immediately. It features a relaxed atmosphere, but fairly prompt service. They also have a jukebox, video arcade and ice cream for after dinner. The varied menu features local favorites and familiar items for the less adventurous. Skip the nachos - they are not what you expect (cheese is served cold).

Favorite Dish: Skip the soda and order a fruit juice. Pineapple and watermelon juices are good when available, but the best is their lime juice (limeade). Meal favorites include the chicken fajitas ($6.50 USD) and burritos ($2.50 USD).

Local guy turned us on to Hodies. Great food. Cheap! Very cool shaded porch. Playground/video arcade for the kids. Good ice cream!
