You'll need a 4-wheel drive!

by saraheg77

If you're planning to drive around Belize and get off the main highway, make sure you have a 4-wheel drive. We took the Bullet Tree Road from San Ignacio to El Pilar and not far out of town, it turned in to this nice, dirt road you see pictured.

Bullet Tree Road
Car vs. Bus

Getting to and from Cayo gives you three options. One, you can rent a car, this can get expensive but gives you the most flexability. Two hire a driver, cheeper and still lets you stop at the Blue Hole on the way to Dangriga or the Zoo on the way to Belize City. Finally the Bus. Novelos bus is really cheep and you get to travel like a Belizian. Depending on the time of day busses travel frequently and there are express options. We took the bus to San Ignacio from Belize City for just $4.50 US. and it worked fine. We hired a driver to go from San Ignacio to Hopkins for $137.50 US with a stop at the Blue Hole.
