    San Ignacio Things to Do

One of our two prime objectives of staying in the San Ignacio area was to explore a Mayan cave. The particular one that we wanted to see was Actun Tunichil Muknal (known as ATM or 'Cave of the Crystal Maiden') because of the skeletal remains of Mayan human sacrifices still there as they have been for the last 1100 years. Accordingly, the evening of...

    San Ignacio Restaurants

Hannah's ingredients are for the most part organic. They apparently have their own farm from which they get their meat and eggs. You can definitely taste the quality. Also they have fantastic breakfasts. Great waitstaff- one of our favourites was "Mercy" One of the best hamburgers I've ever had!

    Belmopan Restaurants

Our final meal on this leg of our trip was at the Bull Frog Inn in Belmopan as we were headed southeast on the Hummingbird Highway, after finishing up with the Belize Zoo and Guanacaste National Park. The Bull Frog Inn is quite a nice establishment, located on the eastern edge of Belmopan's 'ring road' - we and our accompanying friends liked the...

  • Ball Court.

    Xunantunich Things to Do

There are two ball courts in the site, the main one is located between the A-1 and A-2 plazas and had a ritualistic function for the Mayas. Two teams played with a hard rubber ball using only the elbows, hips and knees, triying to introduce the ball through stone hoops attached to the sides of the ball court. It was a matter of life or death, the...

  • CheChem Hah Cave

    Benque Viejo Things to Do

Our resort (Mopan River Resort) organized the tour for us. The original founder of the cave, Will, gave us a tour. He began by leading us through a hike through the jungle. It wasn't too difficult of a hike, but there was a man with us with bad knees who slipped frequently, so I wouldn't recommend the trip for anyone who isn't fit to really hike....

    Benque Viejo Things to Do

The pottery cave was found by a teenager years ago and the tours are given by the discoverer. A moderate hike up a hill leads you to the cave where you descend slowly (you are not lowered by rope, you climb down) and view stalactites and Mayan pottery. If you are staying at Mopan this is one of their regular trips

  • Kayaking down the Mopan

    Benque Viejo Things to Do

The Mopan is an easy kayaking trip. Small dips make the trip interesting and the slow pace makes nature and people watching easy. We saw an iguana sunning itself on the bank and residents washing their clothes and their children. Watch out for trees over hanging the river, we had a nasty run in with one.
