Never having been to a ruin before, nor in the jungle for that matter, this tour was quite fun. If you're headed to any other sites, however, such as tikal, i'd say skip it.
the boat trip was about 2 hours and wound through some beautiful jungle. along the way were able to see some wildlife, including many brids and several small aligators. the menonites also live along the river and you're able to see their farms.
the ruins are *nice*. not huge, but nice. our guide was also a *nice* guy, despite the fact he asked my friend to marry him (and he was already married).
it is possible to do this tour in a day, without actually staying overnight in orange walk. the tour starts at 9, and returns around 4pm, and there is a 5pm direct bus to san ignacio and elsewhere. orange walk itself has little else to offer other than cheap chinese food.
