 | Belize Packing Lists | Tips 21 - 30 of 34 | | : Belize is a very informal country, with a very casual life-style. Unless you are invited to a Government function, please leave your 'After Five' attire at home. Leave your jewelry and expensive watches at home because you will not need them. If you must have a watch, bring an inexpensive watch that is suitable for diving and hiking. If you are visiting the Cayes and/or the Barrier Reef, bring your shorts, T-shirts, and bathing suits, as well as some comfortable tennis shoes or deck shoes. As the sun is probably more intense than what you are used to at home, bring a cap to protect your head from the tropical sun when you are boating and/or fishing. In addition to protecting your eyes from both the sun and the reflective glare off of the water, a pair of 'polarized' sunglasses will enhance the variable colors of the coastal waters of Belize. Loose fitting, light colored cotton pants and camping shirts, along with a comfortable pair of hiking shoes or boots are appropriate for exploring the Mainland or trekking through the rain forest. When visiting the Maya Ruins or traipsing through the jungle, a hat with a wide brim will provide shade from the tropical sun, as well as provide protection from a tropical shower. Be aware that water, beverages, and snacks are not always readily available while sightseeing- so a day pack, to carry a water bottle, energy bars, camera, film, binoculars, poncho, hand towel, etc., is a welcomed accessory. Although you do not wear it, a hiking staff can prove to be a valuable aid to climbing ruins, crossing streams, or walking up or down steep trails.
Passport, Visa (if applicable), Prescription Drugs, Personal Items, Spare Eye-glasses, Sunglasses, Sun Tan Lotion, Sun Screen, Sun Burn Cream, Insect Repellant, Camera/Film, Batteries, Cash, Travel Checks, Credit Cards. And from your personal equipment; scuba diving gear with certification card and dive log, snorkeling gear, binoculars, fishing tackle, etc. Leave a Comment

If you're going kayaking or if you'll be out snorkeling/diving, put your things inside garbage bags and put the garbage bags in your luggage/backpack. You'll be happy to have dry clothes in the evenings after a few hours in the kayak.
Good sport sandals or watersocks to wear in the water. I have a wacky looking tan on my feet from wearing my sandals all the time, but I don't have any cuts on my feet. For the ladies, a sarong can serve many purposes - beach towel, clothing, light blanket at night.
Tons of sunscreen! It will wash off while you're kayaking, so keep reapplying, especially on arms, hands and face. Bug repellent is also helpful on islands where there are sand flies.
In addition to the garbage and ziploc bags, I also bought a waterproof bag for my digital camera (it's made by AquaPac).
If you've been camping before, you probably know this, but a flashlight or headlamp is good to have at night. I forgot mine and had to get escorts back to my tent a few times. It gets very dark on the islands because many of them are uninhabited and have no electricity. Leave a Comment

Try to fit all of your packing into one, carry on for ease and speed of travel. Pack an extra back pbring home to put the trinkets you buy there, or better yet ship them!
Bring mosquito repellent with the highest percentage of Deet as possible, as the mosquito nets are not sufficient and tend to block any breeze while trying to get some sleep in the heat. Bring at least one swimming suit, preferably two since it takes days for anything to dry. Don't bother with any kind of formal or fancy clothes, unless you are staying at a swanky resort with a dress code - no one dresses up! Bring a pair of sandals for the beach and hiking boots or something that will protect your feet from snakes and vegetation if you go walking.
I always pack sample or trial size shampoos and soap, but all of these items are fairly inexpensive in Belize. Sunscreen was a little pricey, so you may want to bring it along.
Just don't forget your camera!!! You can always buy film and/or disposables, but they are expensive. Leave a Comment

Duffel bag.
I would recommend light colored clothing that can breath: shorts, t-shirts, hat, etc. A long sleeve button down shirt is good to have, it really helps with the sun. Good walking sandals, and sunglasses.
Insect repellent and sunscreen. Don't leave home without either.
You will definetly want an underwater camera if you go to the reef. Leave a Comment

If you want to put on a nice dry feeling set of clothes every now and then, you might want to pack some things in airtight plastic bags. The humidity is very high and clothes feel sticky even fresh from the suit case.
Sun glasses, and light weight synthetic shorts that will dry quikly.
Bug spray, dont for get the bug spray. You may even want to pack a mosquito net if you will be staying in more rugged places. Some people in my group found some baby powder very comforting.
If you will be doing much hiking, a water bottle would be good.
