Ambergris-Elvi's: Best plate on the island!

by latin_america_junkie

This was the possibly the best dinner we had during our whole trip in Belize. not only is the restaurant atmosphere very nice and unique (it looks like there is a tree coming through the middle of the restaurant), but the food was outstanding!

Patty's Bistro: Great seafoods and soups

by ozzypete

This is a very colorful and friendly family owned resturant that serves soups and mexican foods and specialty fruit drinks. People from all over the world have signed their names on the walls inside. All food is very moderately priced. They have daily specials on the chalkboard out front. Try the coconut curried shrimp or a burrito

Ambergris-FIDO'S: Decent food and nice party place

by FireMike

This place had all kinds of different stuff on the menu, including a sushi bar upstairs that is only open certain days of the week. It's a cool thatch roof palapa (I think they said it was the biggest one in Belize). Right on the beach with a great bar.

Caulker-Rasta Pasta's: Great Food! Great Price

by FireMike

This is a cool little restaurant on the beach owned by a woman and her daughter. I only saw the daughter, she was actually my waitress. You would think she was a tourist from Ireland with her red hair and freckles, but as soon as you hear her talk, you know she is local. Switching from perfect english to slick creole with each sentence. They have a varied menu but I HIGHLY reccommend the conch fritters, the burritos and the maccaroon cookies for dessert. The fritters are delicious and the burritos are HUGE (see picture). We were in Caye Caulker for 4 days and we ate here 3 times.

Bull Frog Inn: Belmopan's Best

by Bwana_Brown

Our final meal on this leg of our trip was at the Bull Frog Inn in Belmopan as we were headed southeast on the Hummingbird Highway, after finishing up with the Belize Zoo and Guanacaste National Park. The Bull Frog Inn is quite a nice establishment, located on the eastern edge of Belmopan's 'ring road' - we and our accompanying friends liked the looks of the place as soon as we set eyes on it. The front right side of the restaurant features a roofed open seating area, where it is possible to enjoy the natural warmth of the tropical air while you have your meal. We did end up multi-tasking here, getting on the telephone to Hopkins as we used our phone cards on the lobby telephone to try to line-up accommodations for the four of us using information from my print-outs of VT tips and the 'Moon Handbook for Belize' that I was carrying. In the end, we received a few outright 'sorry we are...

I always eat with the locals. Cheaper and fresher: Warning, the peppers are HOT!

by robert19602

Everything you eat here was alive yesterday. I always eat where the locals eat, never at tourist places. I've never been disappointed. Suprisingly, Chinese food is very popular and mostly real Chinese food. There are many Hong Kong Chinese here since the turnover of the Colonies. Rice and beeans with chicken is a staple. All of the seafood is great.

Cafe Sol: A Downtown Gem

by Bwana_Brown

On our first trip into San Ignacio, we had done enough wandering under the hot noon sun and decided that it was time to sit down somewhere cool. We had heard that the two best restaurants in town were Hannah's and Cafe Sol, so as soon as we spotted the Sol, we headed in to check it out.We immediately liked it's large treed front lot, with a number of tropical birds flitting about making the appropriate jungle noises. That combined with the large shaded front patio area was enough for us, so we sat down and had a look at the menu, and we were not in any rush in these circumstances. Things just kept getting better and better as we both grabbed cold Belikin beers (US$3.50 for two) while we checked out our options. The entire menu looked great, with an amazing assortment of either local dishes or those with an international touch to them. We decided to get something to take away so ordered...

The Trek Stop: On Your Own Here!

by Bwana_Brown

Our final week in Belize was spent at a great backpacker's hotel, the Trek Stop, outside San Ignacio and near the Guatemala border. Located up the pathway between the proper Trek Stop Restaurant/Educational building and the accommodations cabins is the Common Area. This building was the main spot for congregation and interaction between the various residents and it also contained a kitchen area for use by the residents. It was equipped with a freezer, refigerator, stove, sink, counters, cutlery and dishes - so it was possible to prepare your own meals here if you wished. The Trek Stop brought in cases of Belikin beers and stored them at the owners house. A case was always left under the sink and bottles could be put into the fridge or freezer by the guests to chill them before use. Any time a resident wanted to have a beer, they just put a check-mark beside their name on a sheet of...

Bird's Eye View Lodge: Meet the Other Guests

by Bwana_Brown

After finishing up in Hopkins and Dangriga, we returned our rental vehicle to Belize Airport and then headed further north to the small inland village of Crooked Tree, famous for it's birdwatching sanctuary. All meals at the Bird's Eye View Lodge were eaten in the dining room shown here. One of the owners, Miss Verna, had the seating pre-arranged for the different groups of guests, mixing us in with a few of the other 'odd' couples who were not part of a larger professional birdwatcher group. On our first evening there (6:30 PM is the set time, as darkness falls) we sat with an American couple from South Dakota and with a couple from Massachusetts the next night. This was a good idea, because it was fun chatting to these people and comparing stories. We ended up going on the bird-watching boat trip the next morning with the South Dakotans and the day after that hitched a ride to San...

Watering Hole Restaurant: Appearances Can be Deceptive!

by Bwana_Brown

We were down to our final night in Hopkins, after a day enjoying swimming and watching the Manatees off-shore, as well as a day-trip to Dangriga. While on the beach, we asked one of the long-time visitors what they would recommend for an evening meal spot. The answer was just down the street from us - check out the Watering Hole Restaurant, especially for their seafood!By 6:30 PM we had made the short stroll down the street and were the first customers to enter the premises - not too promising looking from external appearances. However, we were quickly seated and our meal and beer orders were seen to by a very friendly Belizian lady, who seemed to be running the show and looking after the cookng too. It was not long before a large group of 10 entered and they were soon followed by others as the small building quickly filled up - it looked like the good reports had made the rounds! Sue...
