From San Ignacio it is an easy (uphill though) walk to Capel Pech. Get there early for the wildlife but it is rarely crowded. it is an small site not well restored but the attendent will spend time chatting and pointing out wildlife.

From San Ignacio, I took the twenty minute walk uphill (southwest) -- you will see signs for Cahal Pech along Benque Road. It will cost you Bz$10 ($5US) to explore the site. When I arrived -- there were children at the entrance selling carvings made from slate. The caretaker was taking a (much needed) break and sitting in his wheelbarrow in the middle of the main plaza! There was noone else exploring the site, so I had the place to myself! After chatting with this kind man, I began exploring this magical place. After a while, he joined me and explained the site in detail. He seemed to really care about the history of these ruins -- he struck me for many reasons -- but mostly because it was obvious that he worked very hard to maintain the ruins -- and that a lot of his sweat went into his work -- it was nice to spend some time with such a proud man!

When I landed in Belize City, I immediately hopped on a bus and headed West (to San Ignacio). After a few days, I headed back East, then South -- and stopped in Hopkins for a couple of days. Wow!...
