Beef Island Things to Do

  • Snorkeling at Trellis Bay

At the farthest southeast end of Trellis Bay, in the vicinity of the Beef Island Guest House & de Loose Mongoose, there's a good snorkeling spot with patches of coral and a lot of seagrass. There' s little or no boat traffic here, making it much safer for snorkelers. Sea tortoises and rays can be seen, amongst other critters that inhabit the sea...

  • Trellis Bay Windsurfing

You can take lessons in windsurfing at Trellis Bay, with Boardsailing BVI. I watched this novice windsurfer for almost an hour while awaiting the Northsound Ferry to Virgin Gorda; it's not that easy to get the sail up & get going! If there's not enough wind, you end up falling over again. If a gust hits you before you're braced for it, down you go...

  • Wander the Trellis Bay beach & take in...

Trellis Bay is fun for people-watching, windsurfer watching, and just absorbing a bit of the local color. Artists have their studios strung along the bay, with various fun little cafes that feature local foods in between (and a cyber cafe for Internet & VT junkies). See Shopping Tips & Restaurant Tips for more details.

Beef Island Restaurants

  • Catch the latest on VT while snarfing...

The eats are reasonably priced & very tasty, the deck outside is relaxed and comfortable with a great view for watching the goings-on along the Bay, or you can munch a vegetarian or seafood roti and other local treats while picking up your email from back home. All in all, a nice little break along the waterfront! Check out the menu at the web...

  • If you've got a bit more time (&...

Read a little about the pirates' legacy of the Last Resort & Bellamy Cay here:Black Sam Bellamy & Bellamy CayOwner Tony Snell has become reknowned for his own brand of music & entertainment at the piano bar in the Last Resort Restaurant, making this a highly popular night spot for the yachties moored nearby in Trellis Bay. Meals served are...

  • And for a quick cheap snack...

If you want to go low-budget, or only want a little something to tide you over, just grab a snack from the shelves at the Trellis Bay Market, and either eat on the dock benches or join some of the local guys at the picnic tables provided outside the market. They'll catch you up on the local news & gossip, and spin a few funny stories along the way.

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Aragorn is the premier artist of local fame on Beef Island, and he sponsors the Full Moon Parties at Trellis Bay each month. See web site below for dates & info.

Dress Code: Reef sandals & beach shorts sound about right!

Beef Island Transportation

  • North Sound Express Ferry

The North Sound Express Ferries leave from Trellis Bay, with published fares & schedules (see contact info below). I caught the fast ferry to Virgin Gorda (and it is FAST!). This one makes stops at the Spanish Town dock (called "the Valley" by locals & on the schedules), and then continues on to Leverick Bay & Bitter End Yacht Club. They prefer...

  • Shuttles to Trellis Bay

There is a free shuttle from the main Beef Island airport to Trellis Bay. Just ask the airport employees, and they'll make sure you get on the right shuttle. Another leaves for Road Town Harbour, but I'm not sure if that one was free or not.

Roger Ellis is another UK emigree artist whose work has gained local fame, and it is sold throughout the islands. His main gallery is at Trellis Bay with a fine selection of his works, called "Flukes". Roger has lived in the tropics all over the world, including 2 years on Papua New Guinea, before making the BVI's his home. His paintings are happy...

  • Artists of the islands

Aragorn is a locally famous artist in the BVI's, and justifiably so. Born on Tortola to parents who emigrated from the UK, Aragorn has a degree in Tribal and Twentieth Century Art History at the University of East Anglia His long-time fascination with all indigenous arts & crafts eventually led to his Gli-Gli Carib Canoe Project, "

  • Last stop before cruising!

This is a fun small local market at Trellis Bay, with picnic tables outside for snacking, and it may be your last chance to pick up the little items you forgot before you head out on that sailing cruise. Did you remember your bug spray and sun block?

Beef Island Favorites

  • Trellis Bay Cybercafe

A favorite of arriving/departing travelers. After arriving to beautiful BVI, or awaiting departure...come to Trellis Bay to have a snack. The Trellis Bay Cybercafe has a variety of food as well as internet available. Take advantage of it while you can!! Once you start exploring the islands, you'll realize that internet is rare (and extremely...

  • artist studios

browse through the artist studios in Trellis Bay. They're pretty unique and have a showcase of local art.

  • public art

This might appear ugly to you, or even as just some rusty remains....but it's the locals idea of public art.
