Unique Places in British Virgin Islands

If you are into interesting bars that are out of this world, The William Thornton is one of those bars. Norman Island, the William Thornton is a ship so you can only get there by boat. Not for the faint at heart, Greg's favorite line overheard at the William Thornton, "Son, it looks like it's time to drink some tequila."

If you did not sail into the BVI or bring your own boat, then I recomend renting a small power boat or dinghy for a day or two and getting out and about. The islands are really best seen from the water, and there are so many small jewels of land scattered out in the sea that you will miss out if you don't. There are some tiny islands and empty beaches like you have never seen that you can only get to by dinghy. It's worth every penny spent.

The moon-shaped beach at Smuggler's Cove is gorgeous, partially shaded, comes with two striking reefs accessable from the beach, and, best of all, it's extremely secluded and quiet. Smuggler's Cove is hard to get to and the way isn't marked very well, but if you want a true Caribbean beach experience it's worth your while. It's on the north side of the island, facing Jost van Dyke, and is at the end of a long winding road. There are about three ways to get there, depending on where you're coming from. I highly recommend this beach. We visited the "most popular beach" on Tortola, Cane Garden, and found it to be too commercial, so my family dubbed Smuggler's Cove as the best beach on the island.

But please do make your way to them (we were sailing at the time so we just found a ball and brought the dinghy in).

There is some good snorkeling and some naturally wonderful rock formations.

If you are in the BVI, you MUST SEE THEM!!! It would be beyond a shame to not go. In fact, on our next trip there, we'll be going mainly for the purpose of spending more time there.

We stayed on the Northeast side of Tortola, in Little Apple Bay ...
we hiked up and around the Eastern point and really got to see a good bit of the island. :)
Free range goats, chickens, beautiful ocean views, exotic flowers, a couple of marina's,...

Bring water and great walking shoes.

Be prepared for the hills... I had no idea how hilly the BVI's were going to be..., but they make for some pretty spectacular views!!

We hiked around the island to get here, after being told about it by another couple. Though we did go right after high season, even if this beach were full, it would be beautiful enough to find your way there.

Snorkeling is supposed to be excellent.

The beach is stunning, really stunning.

Good for swimming, this wide, palm-fringed Lambert Beach, also called Elizabeth Beach, is very pretty with fine white powder sand.

Great views to outlying islands. Guana Island is the island shown in the background of the picture.

Green sea turtles nest here in Jan and Feb.

Well worth a special trip! Swimmers must be cautious about the undertow on certain days.

The Botanic Gardens covers just under five acres, in Road Town.
The park gives you a glimpse of a variety of Caribbean flowers and herbs.
The most interesting part is the mini-rainforest with exotic its plants shaded by huge Saman trees.
You will probably spot some birds and lizards there also.
