Easily spotted! by mazzap This is an example of a local tour bus/taxi that you can easily join for a great guided tour. Coming straight off our cruise ship, there were many of these open-sided buses to take us away for a couple of hours. The local guides know all the best routes to keep the tourists happy too! The scenery is breathtaking here so these open buses are ideal!! Leave a Comment Theme: Other

by starship The British Virgin Islands have some of the most spectacular views anywhere in the Caribbean. Getting there is worth the effort whether for a day or a longer vacation. There are no direct flights to the British Virgin Islands, but can be reached by island hoppers, small planes, after a connection in Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, etc. The "Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport" on Beef Island just off the eastern shore of Tortola. There is ferry service to both Tortola and Virgin Gordon from St. Thomas ONLY!!. Cruise ships bring tourists on a regular basis and spend a reasonable amount of time in port for the day. Ships also offer "Excursions" to Virgin Gorda. Private sailboats are another method of arriving at the British and US Virgin Islands for the intrepid sailor! Leave a Comment Theme: Ship/Boat

Taxi driver looking t his overheating engine by grandmaR, 2 more photos Taxis in the Virgin Islands are basically vans that deliver you to your location along with other folks. When we finished up our charter, our charter captains called a cab for us to have a tour of the island. They couldn't get the man they usually used, so they flagged this taxi down and negotiated a rate for an island tour. I think it was about $15-20. He had some folks to deliver from a boat that had come in to their hotels, before he could do the tour. That was OK with us. After he delivered the other folks, he drove us up to the top of the mountain, and I got out to take some photos (see my travelogue for more pictures), and he let the engine cool off. Then he stopped by his house to feed his dog and let him run, and then delivered us back to our boat. When we came to Roadtown by cruise ship (photo 2), there were the multi-person taxis that were used for tours. I also took a taxi from the ferry dock back to the ship. On Tortola, taxis can be found at the Beef Island Airport, BVI Taxi Association stands near Wickham's Cay and the ferry dock in Road Town as well as the ferry dock at Sper's Hole. Taxis can be chartered by agreement. Taxi fare on Tortola is, from or to the Beef Island Airport, $15 to Road Town, $30 to Cane Garden Bay and $35 to the West End. Also, it's $15 to/from Road Town and Cane Garden Bay. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor HomePhone: BVI taxi assoc. 494-2875

We took the ferry from Red Hook, St. Thomas to West End, Tortola with Native Son, Inc. The cost was $30/person one way, and it took about 40 minutes to get there. Once we got to Tortola, we rented a car. Whew...what an adventure! Theme: Car/Motor Home
