    Visit 'George Town'

by frqtflyr Written Feb 25, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Favorite thing: George Town

Bursting with condos and bristling with satellite
dishes, the capital would resemble any North
American urban area were it not for its Caribbean
seaside setting. George Town's attractions include,
late-18th-century Fort George and the Cayman Islands
    National Museum.

Otherwise, George Town functions mostly as a supply
center and shopping mall. Stretching north along West
Bay's 'Seven Mile Beach,' which, if you don't mind the
daisy chain of hotels, offers pristine white sand and
    great diving

Favorite thing: rent a car just for one day. There are many sites to see on the island. You can see the beautiful botanical gardens, visit the national history museum, and see Rum Point for some rest and relaxation.

Fondest memory: The beautiful sand beaches and friendly people.

Favorite thing: You must walk and swim Seven Mile Beach, as it is a dream come true. Warm, clear, calm waters and white sugary sand. Gorgeous and unbelievable.

Fondest memory: Scuba diving is superb in Grand Cayman. Swim with stingrays, eels and fish. Dive great wrecks. Explore walls. Outstanding.

Favorite thing: Snorkel or Scuba Diving is highly recommended. It is one of the top 10 places in the world to do it.

Fondest memory: My best memory's of the Cayman Islands was spending New Year's eve for the new millenium there.
I also booked a Charter Boat to Singray City. This is where you snorkel with Stingrays and actually get to touch them. A truly magical experience.

Favorite thing: Go diving, or if you don't do that, at least snorkle. There are over 140 dive sites around the islands, and almost that many dive shops to chose from.

Fondest memory: Diving 'Hammerhead Hill'. A wall dive starting on the hill at about 50 feet, tapering down to 100 feet and then dropping into a black hole of over 3000 ft. Marine life and coral are both awesome.

Favorite thing: go to Stingray City with Captain Dexter's Fantasea Tours

Fondest memory: Captain Dexter has a sailing catamaran with a capacity of 16 people. He takes you to Stingray City and the reef, serves a fruit platter and fruit punch. It's a great way to spend half a day on Grand Cayman.

Favorite thing: If you go to the Cayman Islands, Stingray City is a must do. Try to go with a small local operator and stay away from the large cattle boats. The stingrays swimming around in waist deep water and brushing agains you is the most amazing feeling in the world.

Fondest memory: I miss the friendly atmosphere of the Island and just being on Island time.

Favorite thing: Cayman Brac has been rated as the #1 destination for scuba / snorkeling in national magazine reader surveys again. The combination of crystal clear turquoise waters and warm friendly people make a combination that cant be beat.

Fondest memory: Our daughter started to snorkel at 3 years of age. Cayman Brac has beautiful reefs with easy access right from shore and many sheltered areas so that everyone can enjoy the beauty of the underwater world.

Favorite thing: The island is British and wealthy so it isn't cheap. There were little sports cars everywhere and people in suits! The island is a bit more expensive but no more expensive than going out in Chicago or New York! We didn't eat here so I can't comment on that but I did enjoy a bit of shopping. Keep in mind that almost 100% is imported, much from India and other countries.

Favorite thing: You need to go on a snorkeling trip. We went to the barrier reef, Stingray City and the coral reef. It was very fun and only cost 15 CI. It was a great deal. At Stingray City you could really touch the stingrays. They are really big and they swim right up to you.

Fondest memory: The water there was awesome. It was these beautiful blue and green colors. It was very lovely. The ocean water was very warm and nice to relax in.

    Beautiful Cayman Waters

    Favorite thing: go diving!
Even if you're not a certified diver - take an introductory dive, or a resort course, but don't just sit on the beach

Fondest memory: Meeting a Carribean Reef Shark from up close.
Also, a much closer encounter with a Great Barracuda (see attached photo). Right after taking this photo, it turned towards me, and showed me from up close that the stories about a Barracuda's teeth are true. Lucky for me, it was more interested in huntig than chasing me...

Favorite thing: Take an adventure ride on the Atlantis Seaworld Explorer Semi-Submarine and see two shipwrecks, corals, tropical fish and a fish feeding frenzy without getting wet. We saw sharks, flute fish, stingrays, divers and many more all from the comfort of air conditioning. My mate did not want to dive, so this was a wonderful alternative. The cost is US$35 Adult and US$19 Child. It was the most enjoyed activity of all. The glass windows are magnified 25 times and you are encouraged to take pictures. You can also go on a night dive in the Atlantis Submarine to 100 feet. The sub has 10,000 watts of lights that illuminate the creatures, corals and colors of the night life on the deep reefs.

Fondest memory: We went to Rum Point and enjoyed mudslides and live music on a warm Saturday afternoon. As we were trying to reaach a deserted area of beach just past the hotel next door we saw 20 or so lizards. When we came upon the deserted area we found hermit crabs everywhere!!

  • paulita1's General Tip

    by paulita1 Written Aug 25, 2002

Fondest memory: I wanted to check my portfolio on the internet. I had been at sea for 5 weeks. I searched around for a brokerage house and found one. The door was locked but business was open. They let me in and actually allowed me to down load my portfolio on 'my yahoo'
I said 'Do you know how the stock market is doing these days?' The broker said 'We only keep an eye on the US markets.' (well, dud! couldn't he tell I was an american?)
He had a 14.4 baud modem. World Wide Wait.
