Not only is Cemetary Beach one of the best places on the island to snorkel, it's also very beautiful. What makes this area so interesting is that right in front of the beach there is a cemetary (please do not walk through - take the beach access in order to respect the deceased). I have snorkeled quite a few places in my time, but this area superseded my expectations. I have never seen a sea urchin, but yet in this area I saw 3! Other snorkeling spots on the other islands may have an abudance of fish, but they tend to be on the smaller size. I was amazed at the size of fish I saw just right off the beach. A huge Parrotfish that played around us for quite awhile, masses of purple wrasse and lots of big Blue Tang. I was just amazed! After snorkeling lay on the beautiful beach for sunning. This is a wonderful area to relax, worship the sun and snorkel the afternoon away.

I'll let you in on a secret. If you are staying on the island, and want to go out to Stingray City and more great snorkleing, head over to the Grand Caymanian Resort in Safe Harbor. You do not have to stay at this resort to go on their trip. The boat leaves the resort dock early (Ithink it was 8) with less than 15 people. We were the first and only boat out a Stingray City for a good half hour before the cruise boat tours arrived, and soon there were hundreds in the water. Once the crowds arrived, we pulled up anchor and moved out to the reef, with breathtaking snorkeling. The captain knew where local morays and sharks hung out, so we were treated to a show.

We stayed there before Hurrican Ivan. I know the reosrt is undergoing renovation due to the storm, and I hope they keep the same tour schedlue. Next time I head to the islands, I will go out with their tour again.

There's a reason that the Nation's icon is a turtle. There are turtles everywhere! You can find them snorkeling or diving, or better yet just go to the Turtle Farm. The Turtle Farm began mainly for the purpose of raising Turtles to be released back into the cayman waters due to overfishing of these species. Today, for a mere $8.00 you can visit the Turtle Farm to view the Turtles from infancy up to 6 to 10 years old. There is a main pond where the older turtles reside and a beach for them to sun in. The younger turtles are grouped according to age in huge tubs. One of the tubs holds Turtles that are 6 - 9 months old and if your lucky enough to catch one make sure to have your picture taken. The best time to visit the turtle farm is prior to or during feeding time. The Turtles will come right up to you hoping that you have brought food. As of the date that I visited the Turtle Farm the area was mainly a viewing area for the different ages of Turtles or you could wait for the tour guide to give you some history, nuances and character of the turtles. They also had a nifty gift shop and concesion stand. Early in 2006 the Turtle Farm will have completed it's expansion to include areas where you may snorkel with the turtles, have changing/dressing rooms, placards explaing the history and character of the turtle and a variety more resturants. I wished I had visited after the Turtle Farms expansion....snorkeling with these majestic creatures sounds like a blast! If your a diver.....after you visit the Turtle Farm don't forget to do a shore dive at Turtle Reef.

    Snorkel with the stringrays

  • OK ... I admit ... I was skeptical, too. But the stringrays really don't bite and really aren't that scary. Take a Red Sail Sports tour to Stringray City and they will provide snorkel gear to swim with these mystical creatures.

The water is pretty shallow at Stringray City (around 10-12 feet) so if deep water scares you, you don't have to fret. The only hard part was handling the current. The coral reef breaks jsut past Stringray City and so you get some movement in the water that makes it a little hard to stay in one spot.

And learning how to snorkel is a piece of cake! I didn't know how to do it until 10 minutes before we jumped it -- after another 10 minutes, I was used to the breathing tricks and such.

Although the Blue Morpho is notoriously difficult to photograph with its wings open, this one decided to pose shamelessly for me - but not till I had chased it around for 10 minutes or so, clicking repeatedly an instant too late.
Blue Morphos inhabit the rainforests of Central & South America, particularly in the Amazon Basin. Rotting fruits are one of their favorite foods; also fungii and dead animals.
Only the males have the brilliant blue upper wings; the blue is not a pigment, but is rather due to the structure of the scales, which refract light in a manner that intensifies blue.

If I had to pick a favorite from all these beauties, it would be the Lacewing, so aptly named. Unfortunately, I was having a lot of trouble with digital lag, and these guys move fast! So I apologize for the slightly blurry shot.

Leopard Lacewings are from the tropical rainforests of Malaysia and Thailand. They are attracted to nectars for food.

Some of the butterflies prefer to dine on rotting tropical fruits, which are served at "the Bar' for their epicurian pleasure.
Most of these are Clippers and Owl Wings, and I'm not sure what species the pretty black butterfly on the far side is....
Clippers are native to the tropical rainforests of the Phillipines. Owl Wings, which can grow to a wingspan of over 6 inches, are found in Ecuador, Belize & Costa Rica.

Something magical happens when the caterpillars are in their cocoons, and no one's quite been able to figure it out yet. They don't simply rearrange themselves into butterflies, they actually break down into a sort of "DNA soup", as my guide explained.

And then an entirely new creatures emerges. Magic!

The Clipper of the Phillipines to me looked more like what I think of as a 'moth', with its thick body. But the guide explained to me the difference between moths and butterflies.
Moths spin cocoons for their metamorphosis period, whereas butterfiles construct them from objects around them.

This is the view of a Blue Morpho one usually sees...I must've taken 40 shots of these guys, before one finally lit on the guide's arm, and then just stayed there with its wings open for a full minute! The guide had never seen that happen before, she was thrilled.
They hide the brilliant blue when at rest to fool predating birds, and the spotted patterns on the under wings ressemble the eyes of a larger animal for further protection.
