Queen Elizabeth II Botanical Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • On the western end of the Island sits the Queen Elizabeth II Botanical Park. It's a large park that is loaded with tropical Flora and Fauna. Although I'm not really a "plant person" this was a nice break from the beach and ocean. Some of the plants you will come across are so different from anywhere else that it really makes the experience worthwhile. There is also a large Blue Iguana breeding facility here where you can get a glimpse of the endangered Blue Iguana. I would plan on two or three hours to stroll the park in it's entirety.

    Hell, Grand Cayman B.W.I.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Oh Hell, did I really write that.. This town called Hell was derived from someone saying exactly that..in the 1930's! When a Commissioner from England visited the District of West Bay and shot at a bird and missed, the town became known as HELL. Another story of how Hell became HELL....is when a visiting dignitary in 1932 remarked that the black rock formations looked like Hell. Therefore, the town was widely known as HELL. Who knows, the truth. Its alittle pit stop, that houses a large field of black rock formations evolving from years of extreme erosion. People have placed small wood cutouts of devlish little characters. Its quite hilarious actually. There are also a few gift shops that have t shirts, keychains, magnets - you name it they have it - every item has the word HELL on it. You know like my aunt and uncle went to Hell, and all I got was this lousy t shirt....stuff like that. One of the stores, has a man dressed up in a devil costume, everyone was taking pictures with him. :0 There is also a good sized post office. Stop by and browse around for a minute or two, pick up some souvenirs and get your postcards stamped with Hell, Cayman Island BWI. You can even send a few postcards home. It took us about an hour door to door back to Seven Mile Beach.

    The turtle Farm
  • Tip Rating:
  • On the way there you will notice road signs with a "TURTLE" picture on and the text 'Turtles crossing' Sea turtles are an important part of the history and culture of the Cayman Islands, and the Cayman Turtle Farm, founded in 1968, has worked to insure the growth and re-population of this endangered species in Cayman waters.

Located just outside Georgetown this little cove is where the locals go to play. Cliff jumping, hiking, picnicing and just plain ole chilling out away from the crowds.

    Swim with stingrays
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you make a crew with a stop in Grand Cayman, do not buy the Stingray City excursion on board. You will find a lot of people ashore who will take you there for much cheaper. It is one of the most famous attractions there and it is really worth it! You go by boat to a lagoon (shallow waters) where dozens of stingrays will dance around you; you can feed them, touch them, swim with them. Very touristic of cours, but still a great experience.

  • Address: Stingray City
  • Directions: Lots of offers at and around the pier

One interesting stop to make in Grand Cayman is to the Turtle Farm. Many different species of sea turtle live here and are bred here. You are allowed to pick up a few of the baby turtles. This is also a good place to stop and order a drink or snack and get out of the hot sun!

    Stingray City!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Since this is THE thing to do in Grand Cayman... I of course had to check it out! It was worth every penny!! We booked the tour through our cruise ship, although I know you can book a land tour if you are specifically vacationing on the island. It may sound scary, it may be a bit expensive, but trust me... do it! Our tour bus took us to the pier in which our boat awaited... next stop Stingray City. There were about 55 people on our boat and it was a bit crowded, but we were all comfortably seated and ready for the ride. The actual boat trip out to Stingray City took about 45 minutes and the water did get a little rough (i.e. people were getting very wet!) But the sun was shining and it was beautiful out so no worries. We were given snorkeling vests and instructions upon our arrival to the sandbar. Please note: no aqua shoes or sandals are allowed in the water... barefeet only. And do us all a favor... quite screaming everytime a stingray comes near you! That's what you're paying for people. Once in the water, there are several locals who will be holding stingrays... you will be given the chance to pet them, hold them and even kiss them (for good luck of course). Watch out... if a guide lifts one in your direction... the "spit" pretty far! :) They of course are wild animals so acting appropriate and not pulling their tails, etc is polite (and safe). But they will swim around you, rubbing up on your legs as they go by. They actually reminded me of cats... rubbing against your legs for attention. It was crazy and fun at the same time.

    Go Scuba Diving
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you haven't done it before, do it. The most beautiful parts of these islands are underwater. Red Sail Sports has a great resort course which includes an open water dive. The instructors were attentive and made me feel safe and secure. I hooked and taking my certification courses back home so I can have more!

    Walking on the beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • Definitely, one of the greatest things to do on Grand Cayman is just to walk on the beach - during the day, at night - alone, with a friend, with a stranger - with horses, dogs, or even cows. The color of the ocean is incredible - I have never seen such bright shades of blue and turquoise! Unbelievable. And, itīs even more fun if you drink a beer or a mudslide while you are watching the sun setting or the full moon ....

Swim with the Stingrays at Stingray city
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you only do one thing when visiting Grand Cayman - this is it. In years gone by when the Caymanians relied on fishing for their food the fishing boats used to cross the sandbar into the safety of the North sound and start gutting and cleaning their fish. This resulted in a congregation of stingrays and other scavangers who would eagerly feed on the parts thrown over the side of the boat. Most tours include 2 snorkel stops at reefs in the sound before arriving at the sandbar with the stingrays. It is about chest deep and I've found that wearing swimming googles is a great help. A full mask is too much, but the sea does splash up. The stingrays are safe to handle, except their tails - so be careful where you put your feet. All in all, an amazing day out. There is a separate location where suba divers can play with the stingrays under the water.

  • Directions: There are many operators who organise tours out to the sandbar.
