Chain of restaurants offering a wide variety of roasted chicken options and local plates. On the menu, you could find patacones, tortillas de mais, elotes, frijolitos molidos, yuca frita, ...
Clean, colorful, thoughful and inviting concept, it's a good way of having an inexpensive and tasty meal. They also have "express" counters and delivery service (call them from your hotel).
Favorite Dish: For diner, we had a chalupa de pollo (big plate of chicken, vegetables, flat bread and condiments) and chicken sandwhich which were quite good and of impressive quality. The desert selection in itself might be worth a visit at this restaurant, we had a flan de coco and a divine Tres Leches (three milks) cake. Still can't believe myself, how good it was!
All that and drinks for 17$. We visited the one in Alajuela, neighbour to the international airport and Hampton Inn, and a rendez-vous point for many shuttles.

Straight in front of the Zoo Ave, the Soda Mariel offers a generous menu and an open view on the rich neighborhood. The service is nice and friendly.
Favorite Dish: Appetizers of Ceviche and Heart of palms salad. Very local! Main course of grilled fish filets. And weird delicious desert of "ayote miel" (I'm not sure of the spelling, I'm not even sure what it is, but I'm sure it's sweet and tasty!)

Address: La Guarita de Alajuela
Our guide recommended we stop there while visiting the Poas volcano and the area. Not sure yet if Freddo isn't his brother of cousin, but we didn't regret our choice.
The staff is very friendly (when I asked if there was a pharmacy near by to buy contact lense solution, because my eye was killing me, they called right away to find out... to finish my story, the only grocery didn't had anything on their shelves for me, but my taxi driver overheard and produce his own eye drops. Muchas gracias Jose Carlos!)
The house, like a log cabin, is pretty neat and very well designed. With a balcony all around to eat outside, but with sliding windows if the wind pick up.
Favorite Dish: Of course, you know it by now... casados!
Fruits juices are good and you might want to try the strawberry (Fresa!) juice as they are grown all around they area. One thing: if the staff recommend sugar, accept. They know how sweet or not their fruit is! I didn't and my drink was a little on the tart side.

The restaurant was located in this really friendly village just 10 minutes from the airport. The flowers, the local culture, the little church and elementary school all added to the ambiance. The restaurant is on the way to the Poa Volcano. Great Food!!
Favorite Dish: The salad and the pizza!!! They grow their own arugula and spring mix in their garden behind the outdoor patio. They have a brick oven and the pizzas have all sorts of neat ingredient, like artichoke hearts, pesto,(the basil is grown in the garden), chicken sausage, eggplant, grilled shrimp. Fantastic

The second floor resturant is located near the catheral and park in Alajuela and has a small open balcony. It has a nice laid back atmosphere with good food and service. Nothing fancy, but it has a very local feel. There is also a guitar player there in the evenings. A nice inxpensive place to vist for either diner of drinks.
Favorite Dish: The sea bass and whole fish. Very fresh and cooked just right.
