We took an afternoon tour that included a visit to Sarchi. This is the place to go if you are interested in purchasing Costa Rican arts and crafts. All of the shops are within walking distance of each other and will ship your purchase back to the United States. If you have the money, I recommend purchasing one of Costa Rica's famous oxcarts. They are all unique and extravagantly painted. They come in all sizes and colors. There are also several local restaurants that serve traditional Costa Rican cuisine. They are within walking distance of the shops. We went to an open-air restaurant and had delicious Casada that was served on a banana leaf. This tour was booked through www.centralamerica.com.

Sarchí Transportation

The tourist busses are frequent and popularly used from San Jose, as well as from Jaco, Punatarenas, and Manuel Antonio. It is the easiest way to get to and from Sarchí, and is also the most comfortable way to do so. Many hotels and tour companies in San Jose have busses and vans frequently bringing tourists to Sarchí, mostly to get cheap handcrafts.

Sarchí Shopping

  • Artisan Crafts in Sarchi

Sarchi is a town famous for its painted wood crafts. You can buy the same sort of souvenirs here as in the rest of the country, but at lower prices. They are also famous for their beautiful painted ox carts which can be purchased for a little more than $100 US.

  • Costa Rican Handicraft Center

Sarchi is where a lot of artists work who produce the crafts for the Costa Rican tourist market. Most of the time the prices are less than the same item in San Jose stores.I didn't want to carry the stuff with me so I refused to buy if they didn't ship. They were reluctant to do this. Therefore I didn't buy anything that was fragile or crushable as...

  • Souvenir City

Souvenir shopping is what Sarchí is about. There are some places that are huge buildings devoted to selling crafts. Just look for places having "Muebles / Souvenirs" painted on it. You can buy any type of Costa Rican souvenir in Sarchí. Anything from coffee to tee-shirts to wooden carvings. Sarchí is known for its hand made painted oxcarts, but...

In Sarchí and on the outskirts of San Jose, you may oxcart drivers. These people only drive the oxcart for tourists and want money for a photo. So just note if you see an oxcart driver with the oxen/cows/donkeys and all that you will have to pay about 100-200 Colones for a photo.

  • The Sarchí Oxcarts and Oxcart Wheels

Sarchí is known for two things, souvenirs and hand painted oxcarts (and oxcart wheels). If you are lucky you can actually go and see some local crafts persons making and painting the oxcarts. If you want you can buy an oxcart (size ranges from .3 meter by .5 meter and up to real oxcart size). But they aren't easy to carry and will cost you a whole...

Sarchí Tourist Traps

  • Sarchí really is a big tourist trap

Sarchí is only good for two things: souvenirs and hand made/painted oxcarts. So really Sarchí isn't that interesting and is a big tourist trap. Only go here for buying cheap and numerous souvenirs, and if you have some sort of obsession with oxcarts. That about sums up Sarchí. Do not go to Sarchí if you want to find adventure, culture, and...

  • Beware of Inflated Prices!

This is basically a shoppers paradise and really worth a trip (not too far from the San Jose airport) but you must comparison shop. If you like to go in and out of shops as I do, you'll be okay because you can comparison shop and maybe even get a deal. But if you just hit one shop, you risk being overcharged and overwhelmed by lots of junk mixed in...
